My take away from this whole thing over the shots from the 2021 4K UHD of the TMP Theatrical Cut is those shots of the Enpterprise leaving drydock should of never been missed with and did not need fixing. Where as you look at those same shots in the 2022 version of The Directors Edition of TMP those same shots look so clear. Also the thing about Grain Management / Frozen Grain different studios handle grain different and when too much is removed a lot overreact and say old it's a DNR mess. Or if the color timming is off for different movies. But the reason for that sometimes is because I feel the original director and or cinematographer are in some cases not around anymore to consult on said transfers they know the film better than anyone. But no the studios put people in charge sometimes of these transfers who know nothing about the film at all and are like lets make everything blue , teal and orange on catalog titles when the film was not shot or photographed that way to begin with.

Not impossible as they have already said the subtitles will be corrected for the UHD release but I am not holding out much hope for them fixing stuff like the lounge scene.

Is there a video of 2022 DC, 4K 2021 and 09 Blu of the E leaving drydock. At this point I wonder if the 2021 4K actually comes in third?

Why are we being so cagey here? If someone said it on the internet, it's public knowledge, LOL. There really is no such thing as a "private" Facebook group, just Facebook groups with limited settings they call "private"...

I couldn't find it. I know there was a version of that shot done by one of the DE folks and shown off by him after the first edition was completed and I can't say I remember it exactly, but I do think it looked similar to what was presented there.

So I did something I wasn't expecting myself to do after all of this. I took out my 2009 Blu-ray of TMP and watched it to see how bad it looked in comparison. While the DNR is an ugly bugger that should never be trusted, I started to notice a few things that felt... off. Not for the Theatrical version, but for the recent Director's Edition. The color timing in a lot of areas looks pretty bad. I had to capture some of it in order to convey what I was seeing.
SHOT ORDER 1. Bolt approaches Klingon Cruiser (1 Frame) 2. Klingon Cruiser is hit and starts to be engulfed (2 frames) 3. Klingon Cruiser is fully engulfed (1 Frame) This is the 2009 Blu-ray showcasing the final Klingon Cruiser getting vaporaized. ![]() And here is the 2022 Director's Edition ![]() You see that? Shot #2 (Klingon Cruiser is hit and starts to be engulfed) has a compeltely different look to it. Not just in comparison to the other versions of the film, but within scene itself. Look at how the Klingon Cruiser glows in the 3rd frame and how it glows in the last frame. The 2009 Blu-ray is WAY more consistent in it's shots than the new edition. Also, look at the Cloud in the background. It's like someone turned off the lights. When I started looking back at the 2022 Director's Edition, it turns out there are even more instances of this. I'll report back when I find more. |

Problem with that is that the officer's lounge windows are angled, not straight up. And it's a pretty steep angle too, so the shots that don't show the windows will feel out of place since they should clearly be in the shot if they're that close to it.

Well my thinking was that if they had done a little carpentry and rotated the set windows 90º and like you said maybe incline the "wall" with them at an angle, it wouldn't been that different to the real thing and looked ok, not exactly accurate but without the expense and we may have given it a pass, kinda like with the rec room needing a 550m ship.

I find the observation deck scene concept in TDE is perfectly fine and I actually like the better realization of it versus the original version.
Just hope if they do manage to revisit it then the major issues are improving the rotoscoping of the original live action plates, replicating more smoothly motion blur from the original shutter angle, and tweaking the rim lighting of the rotoscoped live action plates to better meld with the repurposed four panel observation windows in the background. |

I have no idea why their stuff is always so wrong, whether due to incompetence or intentional but the fact that their videos are popular does a disservice to those viewers and the general physical media enthusiasts. |
