Sam Raimi Says Universal Is Looking to Bring ‘Darkman’ Back to Life!

It’s been 32 years since the release of Sam Raimi‘s superhero/Universal Monsters hybrid Darkman, and many have been wondering if Universal has any plans to ever bring the franchise back to life. In fact, original star Liam Neeson was recently asked about a potential sequel, and he said that he’d be “very interested in reading the script” for such a project.

On that note, filmmaker Josh Ruben (Scare Me, Werewolves Within) has been lobbying to direct a new Darkman reboot movie for a while now, frequently tweeting about his desire to bring the Sam Raimi superhero back to life. What are the chances of that happening? Well, in a new chat with The Wrap this week, Raimi indicates that sequel talks are underway!

Raimi tells The Wrap, “Yes. Universal is talking about a Darkman sequel.”

“There’s a producer attached,” Raimi continues this intriguing tease. “I haven’t heard the story yet or gone into it, I’ve been so busy with [Doctor Strange]. But I think it’s cool.”

Liam Neeson played Peyton Westlake/Darkman in the original 1990 movie, “A brilliant scientist left for dead who returns to exact revenge on the people who burned him alive.”

Darkman was followed by two sequels – Darkman II: The Return of Durant in 1995 and Darkman III: Die Darkman Die in 1996 – with Arnold Vosloo taking over the titular role.

Darkman was a completely underutilised property, I've wanted a legacy sequel with Neeson for years.

But Raimi directs or GTFO.

I still have not seen Darkman III yet loved the first one was not keen on the second one and this would be the first Liam Neeson film in a while that I would be excited about watching.

Honestly, that is just about the only reason I would care. Raimi won't direct it, Neeson won't be playing the main character... I can see this being a direct-to-video remake starring nobody we know and directed by some generic hack.

The original will probably get a remaster from Arrow, who has put out a lot of Universal titles. Uh-oh.

Given how he has been making a living from fairly generic action films for over a decade, he might welcome a chance to appear in something with a built-in audience, allowing him to ask for more money and the use of doubles for a lot of it whilst shooting.

I'd be down to watch a sequel with Neeson starring and Raimi returning to direct. Even I've been getting a little tired of Neeson doing the same kind of generic action/revenge movie over and over again lately. It would be nice to see him go back to Darkman.

Not gonna lie, if this happens, I would love it if one scene has an Arnold Vosloo cameo as one of Peyton's disguises.

Neeson can do a voice-over narration & have a cameo at the end.

Feel like Red Letter Media deserve a bit of credit for this revived interest in Darkman tbh. Seems like someone at Universal saw their recent Darkman re:View and thought, "oh yeah, another Darkman could work pretty well now with how popular comic-book/Superhero movies are" and successfully pitched it to their bosses.

Liam Neeson (age 69) finally reprises his role as the older Dr. Peyton Westlake, still suffering from his unchecked adrenaline surges, inability to feel pain, and super human strength, in Darkman Returns, directed by Sam Raimi, produced by Rob Tapert, and with music by Danny Elfman. Co-Starring Bruce Campbell, Frances McDormand and Ted Raimi (in a new role understandably).

That would be awesome!
