I have a question. When I’m watching a blu ray that is not 4K should I set the resolution on the UB-820 to 1080p. For example, I’m about to watch The Third Man, the criterion collection blu ray that is 1080p, but when my player is set on auto resolution I believe I will be up converting to 4K

I have it set 4:4:4 should I turn it off if I’m on 1080p. Thanks for your quick response. I just like to know these things. I’m not big into up convert I like watching what the disc actually is. |

Discs store the movie in 4:2:0. Everything needs to be upscaled at some point in the signal chain to 4:2:2 to 4:4:4 to RGB. The Panasonic doesn't do any output other than 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 12bit. Just leave everything on auto and no need to overthink. You can force the panny to output 1080p but then the TV will upscale anyway. You might as well have one device do the full upscale to 444 12bit.

When I set the Color Mode to 4:4:4, it converts UHDs to SDR/709 and 4:4:4 8 bit. When I set it to Auto, I get HDR10/2020 4:2:2 12 bit.
Standard SDR blu ray is output 4:4:4 8 bit regardless. Needless to say, I’ve been keeping it in Auto since I don’t want it converting HDR to SDR. So Auto is the best setting or is it interacting with another setting? |
