Oh wow that's a surprise. It's a little pricey for me in the U.S. so I hope it gets another release I can snag

I assume Criterion in the US may pick up the 4K rights to this film but because of their annoying history of taking too long, fans may want to splurge on this set instead. Looks far nicer than anything Criterion would come up with so that's an added incentive.

Also a cheaper version without all of that extra stuff. It should be up at Diabolik DVD eventually too.

Thinking about snagging this and the deluxe Razorback UHD set...

Anyone in the US ever order direct from Umbrella? How's their shipping/packing? Thanks!

I was about to order a copy but for some reason Paypal wasn't taking Pay-In-4 for this so maybe I'll just order it from Diabolikdvd. Do they also carry the Limited Editions or are those exclusive to Umbrella's shop? Shipping was a reasonable $10 USD for Standard international. Maybe that's the 3 month method lol.

They won't even guarantee you'll get that sexy slipcase for Razorback if you order from them

Which is why I ordered that direct from Umbrella

I guess I got my answer. I'll have to order this direct.

Ah, the heck with it. No way I'm passing this up. Ordered this with the Razorback rigid-case set and Turkey Shoot (a steal for $7.00 and got me free shipping ).

Fingers crossed this all makes it to Texas in decent shape.

Does anyone know what kind of a transfer this is? I love this film, but I’m hesitant to order because of the uncertainty on this front. Thanks!

I'm definitely getting this when DiabolikDVD gets it.

I barely remember this movie, other than me being haunted by it in my youth, but not remembering the title. When I was watching the All the Haunts box set from Severin, there was a movie in it that was what I thought was this movie, after doing research, found out that movie from my youth was The Last Wave.

It's from a 4K Scan and restoration done by Umbrellla a couple years back. It looks pretty nice to me, though there might be some color changes made compared to previous releases of the film. I'm not sure if any additional work was done for this upcoming 4K release.
Here are some screenshots from their BD release:

Here's a trailer they put out back then

Yep, I wouldn't assume Criterion intends to make this any sort of priority.

The restoration has been out for 3 years on BD in Australia and Criterion hasn't touched it.

I just finally caved and bought the BD of this restoration recently, so I guess everyone can thank me for the UHD being immediately announced.

I'll still pick this up, grateful to see 3 Peter Weir titles on UHD within a couple of months.

Umbrella did their own restoration of it, so that's likely why. Criterion rarely licenses other labels' restorations, mainly just getting restrorations done or funded by the studio (and their own in-house ones).

When Umbrella first announced/released the Blu-ray with the restoration, member SpaceBlackKnight had said Criterion were working on a 4K restoration before COVID. He thought the Umbrella one might be it, but it was confirmed to be done by Umbrella themselves. Whether what he said was accuate however remains to be seen.

The good thing with this is that, unless they've altered the restoration for the UHD, we know what it looks like, and it isn't the DNR'd revisionist version that Picnic turned out to be.
