Default Blind Blu-ray purchases

Having just plumped for the DC version of Watchmen without ever having seen it, what have other folk's experiences been with blind buys? Have they mostly been pleasant surprises, or have they been absolute disasters!?

Considering about 33% of my collection are blind buys, I'd say they normally go well. However also considering how high my trade rating is, I'd also say sometimes they don't go so well. Watching one right now actually, not the best transfer, Payback.

I don't blind buy often but here's my success rate

Positive: V for Vendetta (blind buy on DVD now on Blu), Wall-e, Clear and Present Danger, Hunt for Red October, Defiance, Polar Express, Lost in Translation (DVD), Departed (DVD).

Negative: Punisher: War Zone

I guess I chose wisely... for the most part.

Thumbs up Blind Blu-ray Purchases

I don't know why anyone would Blind Buy anything, especially when it's so easy to rent. I have been updating my Movie Collection from DVD to Blu-ray, so the only ones I update are the ones I'll watch more than once. Blu-ray's are starting to come down in price, like I bought one today at Costco (Hidalgo) for $13. With a price like this you can't go wrong.

If I'm going to BB something, I usually look that the reviews here and see what the general concensus is. If it's something I could live with and not spend a ton of money for it (typically around $12.00 or less) then I'll buy it.

About 90% of my purchases are blind buys. I live over an hour from a theatre and my local video store only started renting out Blu's last month. I've taken to renting now, but before I had been simply blind buying. With great success I might add.

I blind bought 71 out of 172 blu-rays, and the only one I mildly regret is Hell Ride. I also didn't see the big deal in The Kingdom either but I haven't given it another chance yet. So with that exception, all of my blind buys have been pleasant surprises. I've never sold or traded any of my blu-rays because I love them all.

However, if anybody wants to trade something for Hell Ride PM me. That's the only one I'll let go of

Phew, almost blind bought both of these...! Given everyone's taste is different though. Some selective titles just don't make good blind buys. LIKE HELL RIDE!

I blind buy movies frequently. With the price of rentals reaching ridiculous levels I figure the reward outweighs the risk. In my mind my experience has been very positive with blind buys. I know what type of films I like and if I didn't get to see them in theatres I figure I'll grab them. Anyway here's my list of blind buys with comments:

The Departed -- Extremely Positive
Fanboys -- Positive
Fantastic 4 -- Positive
Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer -- Positive
Forgetting Sarah Marshall -- Positive
Hellboy 2 -- Extremely Positive. In fact I enjoyed this so much that I am mad I didn't see it in the theatre.
I, Robot -- Positive
I Am Legend -- Positive. I only bought this because it came in a Steelbook and was on sale for $15.99.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor -- Slightly Negative. This might be the only one that isn't very good, but I have the other Mummy films (including the Scorpion King) and I'm nuts about completing franchises (I bought Jason X on DVD).
Semi-Pro -- Positive
Simpsons Movie -- Positive
Tropic Thunder -- Extremely Positive. Wish I would've seen this in theatres also, but by the time August roles around I'm usually movied-out.
Zack & Miri Make a Porno -- Extremely Positive. I would've seen this at the theatre but trying to convince someone to go proved more difficult than I had imagined. I figured Seth Rogen & Kevin Smith was a hard combination for university students to pass up; I was wrong. I'm glad I got it tho, one of the funniest movies of 2008.

I think that's all of them. Since only one (Mummy 3) is somewhat regrettable I guess I can say my blind buys have been pretty successful.
