This right here.

I have no problem with a film being long, and I think lots of people don't mind the actual FILM length. Make the film as long as it needs to be in your vision. The problem lies in finding reasonable showtimes to fit a "working adult" schedule. I have managed to see some damn long movies this year year (Avatar 2, Beau is Afraid), but finding a showtime before it leaves theaters, a showtime that realistcally works with my schedule, and making sure it doesn't interfere with social/family obligations can be tough.

When showtimes first popped for this, I was settled with the fact that I wasn't going to be able to see it in theaters (just like Irishman). Thankfully one of my theaters added a few more showtimes, and one single showing in the first 2 weeks worked perfectly (I'll just make it after ducking out of the office for the day). I love a good movie, and I LOVE the movie theater experience, but long movies + travel time + the absolute insane runtime of trailers, apple commercials, coke commercials, regal commercials adds a ton more time.

Got my tickets for this Saturday. My mom is going to have to do some baby sitting on a Saturday, but I hope all of this is worth it because a Scorsese film doesn't happen too often and can't imagine there will be many more films from him.

Well, plenty of 'working adults' found the time to take "Oppenheimer" to nearly a billion dollars at the box office. They found the time, somewhere, LOL.

All I know is the film opens in three days, and these boards have been mostly barren for weeks, except for guys saying they're not going because it's too long.

Isn't anyone happy or excited or anticipating seeing the film? Isn't there anything else to discuss about it?

I'm a 'working adult' for many, many years, and I have a 'working adult' son, and we're finding time to see it Thursday night.

I know people take pride in being able to sit through a 4-hour movie, but there’s really no reason why this shouldn’t have a 10-minute intermission for general audiences. In the age of assigned seating it can easily be done. All the theatres need to do is post a sign on the auditorium door indicating that there’ll be one and how long it will be.

I bet there’s going to be a lot of people going to see this who are unaware of the runtime and will become restless/anxious because they weren’t anticipating it.

There’s movies like Avengers and Avatar that are 3-hour plus without intermissions. But those are basically theme park films and don’t demand as much attention as this.

That it is an R-rated film intended for an adult audience that will be released to streaming within weeks of its theatrical premiere is the issue. If it was any director except Scorsese, or two or three others, they would be fired for refusing to cut the film under three hours if those putting up the money, i.e., Apple, were counting on theatrical box office, which they're not.

Why? Where can adults, you know, the ones with jobs, kids and commitments, find not only the time for the movie, but the time to travel to a theater, plus have something to eat, or at the very least a drink and a small bite, before or after?

Attendees, an older crowd for sure, were groaning when they left their seats.

Their expressions, especially given the subject matter and the film ending, was grim.

Now, switch the film content from getting the gangster gang back together to an even sadder history lesson illustrating how awful the Osage were treated, well, I guess we're going to find out.

Three and a half-hours worth, and ticking.
And meanwhile, you're over there in the "Oppenheimer" thread gushing how that film must be experienced in a theater as intended and find the time and so on. All the hours of it. And you're on about the importance of film culture and it being passed on to younger people and so on and so forth. I'd agree with all of that. (Don't think I'm some 'kid'; I'm your contemporary, if not older than you).

But this film is the exception, apparently.

And Apple's never said that this would be on Apple in just a few weeks. People are but assuming that. If it did well theatrically, the window would likely be much longer, that's what they're waiting to decide on. However, if everyone just says, "I'm not going, because it'll be right on Apple.", then it flops, then that may indeed become a self-fulfilling prophecy, to which I'd say, "Thanks a lot, guys."

Do we have any knowledge already as to whether Paramount has a physical disc release in line for this or will it be exclusively on Apple TV+? Or do we just not have any idea this early on? Not sure if there's been any sort of announcement

Three hours is three hours. Scorsese doesn't have some stranglehold over the space-time continuum. No good movie is ever long enough and no bad movie is ever short enough, as Ebert said. A truly good film can be as much of an out of body experience as a filmgoing experience. I'm happy Scorsese isn't placating plebs and instead asking you to put the TikTok away and be a f**king adult and pay attention for a few hours. It's good for you.

There are no announcements on that.

It is assumed that, after its theatrical release, it will be released on AppleTV.

After a certain window on there, it may see a physical release.

Or the physical may come before Apple (not likely); none of this has been publicly announced, yet.

Speaking of Scorsese and TikTok, I consider this part of the Flower Moon promotion:

“Lily Gladstone ‘ate’ in Killers of the Flower Moon.”

I get what you're saying, but I'm more talking theatergoers as a whole (in the age range this movie appeals to). I have 8 regal theaters near me, all with an RPX/IMAX screen. Daily for almost 2 weeks, each theater has 1 showtime for premium screens, 1-3 for standard, running on single screens. Oppenheimer, being 30min less, can fit more showtimes per day and was showing on multiple standard screens as well.

So I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying this will most definitely be different from your example of Oppenheimer. As Oppenheimer had significantly more showtimes, dominated premium screens and didn't have Taylor Swift eating up all the theaters. Even with the Barbie hyper, Oppenheimer had significantly more showtimes per day than KotFM, which makes it more difficult for those with less available time to see it in theaters.

All I'm saying is, those factors make it more difficult due to its runtime making less available showtimes per day.

But this film is the exception, apparently.
Oppenheimer is the exception, not the other way around, distinct from KOTFM and nearly every other recent release as it was filmed with IMAX cameras and intended to be optimally screened at an IMAX theater with a 15/70MM film print, limited to 30 theaters worldwide. Beyond the uniqueness of the presentation, Nolan insisted the longest theatrical window possible, where we are now waiting upwards of four to five months before the film is available for home media.

KOTFM is a 4K DCP, not filmed for IMAX with IMAX cameras, but a fairly standard ARRIRAW 3.4K. My personal preference, if I were to screen KOTFM in the theater, would be my go to Dolby Cinema.

Regarding the runtime, in my opinion there's a big difference between 180 minutes and 210 minutes after you've been siting for three hours. That last half-hour can seem like an eternity if the on-screen experience is not compelling. Which it wasn't for The Irishman. In fact, even though Silence was far shorter, it also felt overlong.

Oppenheimer? Three hours was just right.

My personal hunch is KOTFM will be available on Apple TV+ four to six weeks after the theatrical premiere, and certainly before Christmas. That's a big difference in comparison to the four months for Oppenheimer.

But to get to the point and as I've already noted in this thread, unlike Oppenheimer, where I was completely on board after the first trailer and ultimately walked out of the first IMAX 15/70MM presentation thinking this is the best film I've screened in the 21st Century, I don't have the same high expectations, and it stands to reason I'm not quite as motivated to screen this in the theater given the runtime.

Don't get me wrong. I'm fairly confident KOTFM will be a worthy watch, perhaps a great film even, but having read the book and thinking this is one of the best books I've read in a long time, and then later learning of how Scorsese determined that the book as written was not the film he chose to make, well, I'll see soon enough if that was the right call.

5 hours total time to see this including time there and back, previews and the film is going to be a challenge. It looks promising though and I'm sure it's going to be an epic movie from Scorsese. He's known for longer movies so I'm not complaining. Just a matter of time.

I’ll be going to see it with my best friend (who’s had a spinal fusion). We’ve sat through movies at the theater literally twice as long as this one. 3 1/2 hours is NBD for us.

DiCaprio's accent is laughably bad.

The praise he gets is mindboggling...he literally had to have sold his soul to satan in order to get where he's at today. There's no other explanation.

I have avoided everything about this movie before seeing, so I can't comment on his performance in this, but he's a fantastic actor in many other films.

I'd go so far as to say he's one of the best of his generation.
