I have a Wii in another room that's modded so it can run things via a Homebrew channel. As far as I know the same can be done on the WiiU's built-in Wii emulator. I still need to get some compatible Mame ROMs for it, for some reason most of my Mame ROMs won't work on the wiiU. I'm not really sure what to do beyond that. Other than maybe needing to re-download a game for the wiiU or 3ds again, there isn't any use for the internet on either as far as I can tell?

You can hack it to play Wii U games, for one thing. Plus, why go through Wii mode to run emulators when you can just run them natively? There's also a Miiverse reimplementation in the works and homebrew apps available.
