The theatrical cut is a bit of a mess, I think even Twohy knew it, I definitely felt it when I saw it, it was clear they hacked it for runtime above all else, that's why the film had a second life on home video after a disappointing box office run. I believe at that time it was frowned upon to have an action film over 2 hours, it wasn't until Nolan/MCU stuff that I noticed the shift to a longer format in those movies from the studios.
