^ Agreed on how awesome PMS is. I used to use TVersity which actually worked just fine with regular XviD files and such. But PMS totally blows it out of the water.

does the ps3 ever update the codecs it can play on its own or with we always have to do the video conversions manually?

They come with firmware updates.

Most of the formats are currently supported by the PS3. I think only MOV's are incompatible on the video side.

Some video types don't show up when on a thumb stick but they will play if you can get them on your system. Using a media server such as PMS is the ideal way. If you have a router use a media server such as PMS.
