Agreed that we're seeing a flood of brutally difficult games where your main goal is to reach the end of each level to fight a mercilessly overpowered and oversized and unfair boss, learn their pattern, and then proceed to the next level. That's been going on since the NES days, but I'm burnt out with arenas to fight giant bosses in.
Shadow of the Colossus, that game tried something different by adding puzzle elements right into the boss fights. So you can't just attack, you have to find a weakness and then find out how to access it by waiting for the enemy to reach a certain vulnerable spot in the landscape. Clever game. Not that some of these aren't clever too. But more clever bosses would be welcome. In Stellar Blade, there is a ruthless spike circle faced giant monster boss that I have to go back to defeat after I level up way more in the game. First time facing it in the oil barrel section, and I thought the game forgot was "casual" mode was, as the boss took forever to weaken and I ran out of health vials. Too aggressive of a boss. Very short window to attack. Not fun. Aren't games supposed to be challenging but also fun? These seem more like chores sometimes. |
