Hold fast! Day one purchase regardless of price. After KOH and Dark City, this will easily go down as my favorite year for 4K releases. Now just give me Sunshine and Apocalypto.

It sure is! 28 page booklet, map, a second disc of substantial making-of features, beautiful fold-out digipack. Those were the days!

I agree wholeheartedly!

What impressed me most about the sound mix was not even the battles and the storm, but the quiet scenes. I distinctly remember during a scene belowdecks, I swear you could hear the footsteps of crewmen walking around above us! No, there weren't any ceiling-mounted speakers, just wizardly sound mixing!

I can understand not liking it, it's not everyone's cup of tea. When I first saw it I enjoyed it but it felt a little off. I thought about it and I think it's because the movie was not what I was expecting it to be. The second time I saw it as more "life on a ship" and just took it in and I enjoyed the hell out of it. It's incredibly beautiful to watch and I love the characters and cinematography as well as the time period. Everything else is just icing on the cake to me. It was incredibly mis-marketed.

This will be a killer 4K disc, definitely getting this. I’ve been wanting this movie on 4K for a long time! Hoping Man on Fire and Cast Away are going to get 4K releases through Sony as well!

This is another one of those I almost forgot about. Then it's officially announced and I'm like, "Oh yeah, I subliminally wanted this really bad! Gimme now!"

Who cares. They could serve it up in a paper sleeve at this point and I’d take it. This film is epic and one of the most deserving 4K upgrades I can think of.

Count me in the camp that does not think it boring at all. The times between battles give you character development of the highest order that makes the stakes in the battles much higher. To me, I don’t think a single frame is wasted in this masterpiece. Also, if they actually improve the sound, then it may be the best reference disk to demo sound systems.

Seems to have been pulled from both of the Finnish storefronts where the UHD release appeared.

Plenty of people care. Nobody says the movie isn't what's most important, but steelbooks are more prone to damage especially in shipping, have smaller stock at a time (if they're not limited edition) because the cases have to be specially made and can't just print off some new artwork and stick it in a pre-existing case, and the studios, Sony and Disney in particular, like to use the "collectible" excuse to jack their prices up $10-30 more. It's a valid thing to have concerns about.

Plus some people just plain don’t like steel books.

And that's fine, nobody said there should be no steelbooks in general, but it's shitty to take away the choice just so they can charge more without a standard to price comparably to.

The recent spate of steelbooks without standard releases raises the concern that in a rapidly-shrinking market there may never be another standard release of a steelbook-only movie. Personally, I don't believe that's true for most movies, but I am worried nonetheless. If the only version available is a $40+ steelbook, that's as good as not available to me because I'm never going to pay that much (adjusting for inflation) for a single movie again.

Speaking for myself, even if the steelbook were the same price as a plastic case edition, that's still a loss for me, as I don't have the space or sturdy enough shelves to support heavy boxes - nor do I want to pay more money to store home video packaging. I don't collect packaging; I collect movies.

There's still the Blu-ray. On this site, the Blu-ray review was extremely favorable and called it near-reference quality. If that's true, I wonder how much better a 4k will turn out to be

If there's no UK standard edition unlike Kingdom of Heaven, I'll have to make an exception and buy the steelbook (and hope against hope it arrives in Brazil in mint condition). This is too great a movie to avoid because of the packaging.

I have the Blu-ray. I'm watching it right now. It's a very good Blu-ray by 2008 standards, but is quite dated 17 years later. A well-done 4k (i.e., not Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean) would be a big leap in image quality.

And - how to put it politely - the reviewers on this website have a lot to learn about Blu-ray technology, writing, and what the purpose of reviewing a Blu-ray is.

By no means am I arguing for less (or no) choice. The fact that the two regions are marketed so differently is frustrating: 4K with streaming code here, 4K with 2K there. 2K-only releases here vs 2K and 4K options. Steelbook only vs Steelbook and Amaray options. Plain matte finish vs spot-gloss with embossing. Someone is convinced there isn't an audience for the options here, but there is over yonder.

They're still making the options to sell, they're simply not selling them everywhere. It's a mess, but I don't see charging more as the reason. It's far dumber than that. lol

Oh I know. This is just so high up on my wish list that things such as packaging variations isn’t of consequence for me, so I was making light of it. I really don’t care how I get it, as long as I get it.

This is one of those films that would benefit greatly from the format IMO. The beautiful visuals and sound mix could make this a reference disc. Especially if we get an Atmos track.
