I just noticed that it’s the same font as Empire of the Sun. Makes sense since Fireflies came out a year later and is also a classic about a child suffering during WWII.

Personally I think the old illustration of Setsuko made her look a bit dumb. I like this artwork a lot more but prefer the red background, but apparently its not metallic like on the other Ghibli steelbooks?

Either way I like this illustration a lot better, even if it is against black- in the end, it's the Japanese poster, which is f*cked up since you can see a bomber above them if you turn up the brightness And it works, since it's basically a scene from the film.

Also, I'm confused as to why there was mention of 4K on the site's code. But that spine mockup is pretty final. It sucks there was a 4K restoration for this but no 4K release. Then again perhaps the only benefit from that would be the colors assuming they give it HDR/Dolby Vision.

I like this steelbook design better than the previous Sentai release. It will match nicely with their other steelbooks as well.

I didn't like those SteelBooks, felt like they were going for the DreamWorks/Illumination audience. I prefer the new style used with Fireflies and Kimitachi.

My steelbook came in today, however unlike previous GKids Ghibli releases it didn't come with any kind of booklet... Is it simply missing, or was this release never intended to come with a booklet?

Got this and few other new 4Ks in a PR box today. Mine didn't come with a booklet either aside from the Ghibli steelbook insert pamphlet. I don't know if the standard edition comes with one, or if the original Steelbook came with one (I don't think the original standard edition did). I'm guessing not though since Ghibli didn't directly handle this one.

I'm still surprised they didn't re-release this in 4K. I remember that detail being on the website's code when it was announced, and someone I spoke to who is somewhat involved with 4K / Blu-ray releases did mention that this had a 4K DCP.

I got the standard edition today and there was also no booklet in it. Weird, really, cause every other GKids release I have has one.

Well, not this one but the Sentai release. I haven't rewatched it yet so I kind of wish I'd waited for this one as the cover is more apprpriate.

I've only watched the film once, when I had the widescreen VHS tape.
