The oven-cleaning scene from the 2025 Naked Gun is on YT now - the normally prudish MPA must have been on 'shrooms that day to let this fly at PG-13 - this would have been a surefire 18 back in Ferman's day:

I can't lie...I was expecting an R rating for that film. Haven't seen it yet, but from what I've heard, I'm surprised its a PG-13.

Which films would be next to get downgraded to a 15? My guess would be Commando, which is long overdue.

There was no controversy - a few YouTube videos and bits of clicktivism but nobody really cared. If James Cameron hadn't acted like the baby he is, it would have come out in the UK in the same edit as we've always had.

This is an insane idea. The law isn't there just to protect the animals harmed in the filming, it is there to prevent illegal abuse material being available through mainstream channels - these are illegal images full stop. It doesn't matter if an animal was harmed on screen 1 year ago or 31 years ago, it's still footage with the power to inspire imitators, titillate abusers and risk further measurable real-world harm. It'd be like saying CSA material should be legal to view after 18 years because they're adults now.

These aren't arbitrary BBFC laws based on current fads eg nunchucks, these are actual UK laws that draw permanent red lines above what is known legally as "making images" of abuse, and 'but physical media collector sub groups want their Blu-rays to be uncut' is never going to be a deciding factor. The supposedly civilised world is a much sicker, more obscene place than any of us would like to contemplate (you need only look at the recent news story about the surgeon), and abuse material censored from publically available movies is in my view completely acceptable collateral damage. Since the internet and video sharing really broke in around the turn of the millennium, we have all been living in the Wild West, and this should never have been normal. Creating special exemptions for abuse laws is on nobody's to-do list.
