I love Onkyo but if that Marantz has pre-outs... "game over, man! Game over!" It's a refurb, but I wouldn't let that scare you off. You can always get a squaretrade warranty if you're worried about that.

Amazon currently has a deal on the Onkyo TX-SR607 for $349.99, plus you get a free Onkyo UP-A1 iPod dock. Free S&H of course! Lower than your budget but hey, who doesn't like to save as much as possible while getting the most bang for your buck?
Double-piggybacking off the 607, there is also the Onkyo HT-RC160 that just released, which is essentially the same as the 607 minus the front HDMI port and I think 10w/ch. Should be a little cheaper, roughly about a $50 price diff in the US.

I also second the 1610 which I just picked up last week for my office. My choices were between the HT-RC160 and the AVR-1610, but I went the 1610 route only because the receiver sits 3 feet from me on my desk, and all the talk of the 607/160 running hot didn't appeal to me with my proxmity from the unit. The 1610 has actually surprised me performance-wise, and the Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume (which also comes with the RC160) is just awesome! I've been using the unit pretty much all day for music while I work, and it does not run hot after hours of use.

I wouldn't brush off Sony with such a wide stroke. They may not appeal to you for whatever reason, but there are many satisfied Sony AVR owners here.

While I personally wouldn't consider the lower-end equipment manufacturers either, it should be noted that not everyone can afford top-notch equipment.

Default What receiver to replace a Pioneer 56txi?

Hi: I'm thinking of replacing my pioneer elite 56Txi. I have a few questions to ask. I'm thinking of going with either 1910/2310 or a 2808/09or Marantz 5003/7001/2,my speakers are Axiom M-60's(mains) Vp150(Center) which one of the Denon/Marantz or any others you'd care to recommend? My main concern is the music side of the listening equation. My room is approx. 1,700 cubic feet. One final question what is the general opinion of the PS-3 as a blu-ray/DVD player? Thanks for all your help in advance it is very much appreciated!!!

Don't know what your thoughts are, but I have had 2 sonys, the 710, which wasn't that great, and my current 920, which is an ES2400 minus some pre-outs and other little additions. and it has been a great receiver.

I don't know what you think you are getting with Pioneer and Yamaha anymore these days because they both tend to bench test in the NOT so Good category too. Pio 1019 rated 28.7 wpc with 5 channels, not the 120 listed. The Yamaha 665 rated at 42 wpc with 5 channels. Fact of the matter is that companies are having to add so many features that entry-mid level receivers are losing power for features.

Personally I think you need to be in a Marantz, Denon or Pioneer Elite in order not to get into the above categories

I don't have any experience with the model you mentioned, but I have owned two Yamaha receivers and two Yamaha integrated amplifiers in the past. They were excellent. Many of the low priced Yamaha receivers have pre-outs.

I went with the Onkyo. Bought it off of NewEgg.
I know...the iPod dock... I just got a $7.00 3.5mm adapter (I don't require a dock, cable works fine) and saved $30! Woo! I can't wait to get it and set it up!
