So spending only $395 for the "5" of your 5.1 leaves you some room to work with. You can get a decent sub for $200 or break your budget a bit and get a killer, ass-kicking setup. Better that than spending $1,000 on something you'll just want to upgrade in six months.
Oh I'm not afraid of breaking the budget, i do it all the time..haha So what "ass-kicking" sub would you suggest? those polk speakers that you listed look pretty damn nice..IMO

I'm happy with mine because I'm a cheapskate and got a pretty good deal on it. You should look for a 10" or 12" sub with some decent stats--watts yes, but also the low-end range. I share walls and a floor so I went with the 10". The eD sub is mentioned a lot because it's a good value at $350, but it may be more than you need.

HERETIC!! Just kidding.

Seriously though, there are other advantages to the bigger, better-made subs than just volume. They can usually go lower and produce cleaner, more accurate sound. It's also never a bad idea to have some headroom with any of your equipment.

Yes, I know, NEVER DOWNSELL!

I was going to touch on the quality question in my previous post, but I didn't want to clutter it. Yes, larger subs almost always go lower, but quality-wise I would argue sound from a good 10" sub is virtually identical to sound from a good 12" sub in almost all situations heard with almost all ears. The OP has limited space and a budget, so compromises must be made. Ideally you go with 12" (at least!). It's been a while since I shopped for subs, but as I recall a good 12" sub is usually a bit more expensive than a good 10" sub.

well if you want the best you can get for your budget, Look into these systems.

This Receiver is one of the best, yes it is refurb, but has a factory warranty and is a better refurb unit then anything else for the same price brand new.

For speakers. I am gonna show you some different setups that will blow away the Polks, you may not know the names of them, but they are high-end brands that cost a lot more then what you will pay.

Canton 403s $329/pr
Canton 407s $599/pr
Canton 405 $299

Speakers $1227

OR

Mordaunt Shorts $599 with sub

OR this

Canton Bookshelf setup $989 and comes with a subwoofer

Or this

Energy setup sale $975 includes velodyne sub

Or

PSB Image T45
PSB Image B15
PSB Image C40

Total $1000

For any of the items that don't have a sub you could look at any of these
Acoustic Audio, Premier Acoustics or Elemental Designs

Hey long time reader first time poster here.

I've been looking over these forums for the past year or so learning all i can about HD audio. I'm looking to buy my first setup, never used anything more then tv speakers for audio before lol.

I've read alot of recommendations but I'm in Canada so most wouldn't work for me, what with shipping and the exchange and all that.

But with boxing day coming up, a couple things caught my eye in the Best Buy and Future Shop flyers:

Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K Receiver - boxing day sale is 399.99
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...06&catid=20313

Polk RM75BD Speaker System - boxing day sale is 349.99
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0131998&catid=

Would these two combine for a good first setup? I'm using a PS3 as my blu-ray player by the way.

Thanks alot

I don't know anything about them, but the Amazon deal-of-the-day for those klipsch bookshelves would probably work for you....... 3 sets of them would give you a 6.0 for $450 add $400 for your AVR, and then spend a couple hundred on a sub, and you're in business
