This is from Wikapedia - A decade is a period of ten years. The word is derived (via French) from the Late Latin decadem, accusative of decas, from Greek decas, from deca. The other words for spans of years also come from Latin: lustrum (5 years), century (100 years), millennium (1000 years). The term usually refers to a period of ten years starting with 0 and ending in 9.

Agreed. The people that argue that the decade goes from 1-0 instead of 0-9 are absolutely crazy.

Breakout Star

1) Sam Mendes (director--American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road)

2) Javier Bardem (Before Night Falls, The Sea Inside, No Country for Old Men

3) Penelope Cruz (Volver, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Abre Los Ojos, Vanilla Sky, Elegy)

4) Todd Field (director--Little Children and In the Bedroom)

5) Joe Wright (director--Pride and Prejudice and Atonement)

As you can see, I think there are some great directors that came out in this decade that we will really have to watch for in the near future, especially considering the projects each are working on.

That's a very good list. I especially like the inclusion of The Lives of Others, which I think is by far the best picture of the decade, with Downfall being second. I also like that you included Changeling, which I think was the second best film of last year.

While they are all domestic films (despite Iwo Jima being in Japanese), I think you have a pretty nice list here.

Thanks , I always make a point of trying to see as many of the oscar foreign film nominations and this decade has been a real treasure trove of goodies as usual. I still think more people need to see these films though.

Yes I'm absolutley crazy. Apparently then so is the American school system. You can go ahead and look up year 0 all you want. It doesn't exist. 1-100 is the first century. 101-200 is the second. 1901-2000= 20th century.

You can insult me all you want. Anyways. I'll play along.

Best picture:
Hmm. That's a challenge. I'm gonna go with A Beautiful Mind. Maybe. I don't know.

Best actor
Leonardo DiCaprio.
Best actress
Jennifer Connely
Best score
Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix
Best director
Peter Jackson
Best animated:
Spirited Away
Breakout star:
Michael C Hall
Best blu:
I'm gonna go with Wall-E. It has 5 star everything. It's certainly not my favorite blu, but it's the complete package.

I like your selections. I also will not comment on the decade thing other than to say that you are incorrect, no disrepect meant. You have to be aware of the history behind the numbers, which is another story completely and shouldn't take away from this thread

There's a lot of choices I disagree with, but def a nice list all the same. I like your inclusion of Giacchino's scores.

Ya, I looked at his IMDB page and realized the guy has done so many of my favourite movie scores.

I can see how you disagree with my list..I do have some odd choices and my inclusion of Spider-man 2 and The Dark Knight as Best films isn't for everyone.

here's why you're wrong: you would consider it accurate to say Goodfellas (1990) was the best film of the 80's. that's just nonsensical. i'm just using your logic as applied to what you would call the 1981-1990 "eighties" decade.
