This is the animated one, right?

I wonder when they'll get around to releasing The Hobbit??

The folks that did the hobbit also did Return of the King. It was sort of a Half-assed attempt to finish Bakshi's work. Right now on Amazon, you can get a 3-pack of Bakshi's LOTR, Rankin-Bass' Hobbit and Return of the King.

Yeah, I have the three pack. I wonder why the didn't release it on blu ray? I think I'll pass until they do.

Is the DVD copy in this exactly the same as the previous DVD (featuring the film's trailer)?

Nope; it's a new pressing of the BD's materials on a DVD platter. Sucks goat balls, right? Because of Warner's new penchant for dropping trailers, this is the second snapper case DVD I've had to hold onto (after CLASH OF THE TITANS) this month...

Dayum. You're right. Neither the DVD nor the BD have the original theatrical trailer.

It's ridiculous, considering you can go out and buy the single DVD WITH the trailer. As a big Tolkien fan it is very frustrating to have to hold onto the old DVD still. Not only that, but not need the one provided with the Blu because my old one is BETTER.

I'm too OCD with my collection to handle that brand of cross-pollination.

Oh, and piss on digital copies.

I just started watching this tonight and got about half way through it. Had to stop so I could get some sleep. So far I love it. Not as much as "Fire and Ice" but good none the less.

It's worth watching, but a word of caution: this version ends after the Battle of Helms Deep, which is about half way through the actual story of LOTR. When I saw it in the theater and it suddenly ended, the audience was unpleasantly surprised.

I've never seen this.

I guess the BD will be a good opportunity to see it for the first time.

They never got to make the sequel, but far from Bakshi's best animated work.

I think the animated Gollum in the Hobbit and Return of the King looks better. More like a monster.

The voice work in those is great, and I also like the animation style (anime-ish).

I'm surprised they didn't include those with this and just make it a whole package. I rewatch the animated Hobbit often, but the animated LotR? Meh. I'll pick it up when it drops to the ~$10 range.
