I don't understand what speakers need to be/have? Something about HDMI or watts? To be honest, I'm not fussed about HD sound as all I have at the moment is the TV speakers which are surely not HD.

So, I'm just looking for speakers, 3.1, 5.1, doesn't matter. As long as it's under £100 and will be an improvement.

Ok, so you aren't really interested in what makes a good speaker, you just need to know if you can get something good for under $150.00 (about 100 British Pounds.)
Long story short, your best bet will be a 2.1 set of powered PC speakers. As long as you have a headphone jack to plug them into it is simple as pie.
Look at the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's, or the logitec Z-2300's or any of their competition.
The movies you mention are poorly mixed audio wise (but you know that already) so they will not sound great on any speaker. But for your budget this is about your only option, and they will still put tv speakers to shame.
