In case you're not being sarcastic: generally speaking, grain *is* the film.

Grain is just part of the film itself.

Referring to more noticeable grain, it's often a stylistic aesthetic choice on the part of the director and camera-man to give the film a more gritty, dirty look. Many war films now use the technique, such as Saving Private Ryan, The Hurt Locker, Green Zone, Black Hawk Down, 300, The Bourne trilogy, etc.

Remove the grain and you remove detail. The HDTV vs blu ray comparison pictures in this thread are a great example.

But only because of poor source, right?

The "poor source" between the blu ray and HDTV is the HDTV version, yet it clearly has more grain and detail vs the blu ray since the blu ray has obviously undergone some additional DNR (among other things). HUGE red flag.

ehm sir.. could you please step over here for a second.. I have something I need to tell you under the unfortunate circumstances of the situation..

I fear the amazing look you.. and well myself, have been well, anticipating.. Its kind of.. how to say this.. down the crapper if you will..

It has been hard on us all, and well.. If you need any counseling or mental/spiritual help of the sorts, don't be afraid to ask.

I am hear to console your grief and the loss of a beloved film through the death of its crucial and well loved visual quality. Just know that myself as well as Pixar will be here to help you get through this very close and hard taken loss.

I wish you the best my friend, and may life treat you well.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

In real life you don't live in world projected through film, if you did - you would see grain.

Forget about how you feel about the appearance of grain itself - when they remove it they "scrub out" fine details of the filmed image. This leads to things like unnaturally smoothed over "waxy" textures and textures that look as though they've been molded out of clay – among many other negative things. Keeping the grain structure intact keeps these fine details intact - and since the grain structure varies from frame to frame the grain itself never becomes a nuisance when viewing the film... it actually gives it a more organic, natural film-like look (like watching it presented in a cinema.) Watching a version where grain has been removed, and very fine detail along with it, hugely detracts from the viewing experience. Makes it look completely unnatural. Removing the grain doesn't magically reveal the filmed image more clearly, it actually removes details of the filmed image.

Mouse over this to look at a comparison (LotR broadcast version without heavy DNR vs. Blu Ray after the application of heavy DNR.) Bilbo's face is void of pores and the life-like fine details that give skin the texture that makes it look like skin. In the BD cap he looks like a wax figure.

I just dont get it. This proves that it isnt the source material. Im just so disgusted by this, between the packaging and now the shitty PQ for FOTR, Im probably gonna skip out on these all together.

i get it. the reason the 1st looks worse is because it's not the official journey yet. frodo isnt sure what he wants to do and this are a bit BLURRY if you will hence the lack of sharpness. then when he gets on that boat and realizes he needs to to this on his own things become more CLEARER hence the sharpness in the other 2.

hows that for an excuse of the bad 1st disc lol.

I'm going to write an angry letter to Warner Bros. It'll read something like this:

Dear Warner Brothers,

**** your face.

Sincerely,
David

I think that about sums it up.

In hopes of possibly turning the discussion in a more positive direction, are there any more ROTK screenshots? Everyone seems to agree that it has the best PQ of the bunch, and is a pretty great transfer.

This discussion is doomed, as doomed as Minas Tirith was in RoTK before Gollum jumped on Frodo and fell laughing into the crack of Mount Doom with the One Ring.

"I will say in the meantime, FOTR will never look as good as film 2 and film 3 for at least a couple of reasons, one being that TT and ROTR were slightly SHARPENED during the DI process with a new tool -and FOTR was not. If memory serves, FOTR is about 70% DI and 30% photochemical -from which an edited film master was then made."

- Penton-Man https://forum.blu-ray.com/3066790-post12768.html

The scenes may be the same, but that doesn't mean that they were originally finished within each film identically, especially when it comes to color timing, as these shots are followed by completely different scenes with their own intentions.

Scenes from The Godfather / The Godfather Part II within The Godfather Part III don't look the same, either.
