Unhappy Audio Problem/ Can you help?

I have a Panasonic Viera TV and a Sony Blu-ray player. I have played only 2 Blu-ray discs, both required me to turn the TV volume all the way up to hear the sound track. What am I doing wrong?

Hey, somebody help the guy, if only with at least a referral to the proper thread/forum.

C'mon folks, Eddie is a new member.

Id love to help him Penton, buts its rather vague question. My suggestion is that he look in his bluray player settings and see if there is some sort of volume settings.

I do seem to recall that Panasonic Viera's (my mom owns one) have input specific volume and you can adjust the volume levels. So my advice is to check the TV setting volume menu first.

You have to read your manual and set your audio output to stereo instead of 5.1

  • Try what merrick97 suggested
  • People who make Blu-ray disks may be more likely to use the entire audio dynamic range (ratio of loud to soft) of the original movie, which would mean that the average level would be lower, in order to allow the dynamic peaks to be their full loudness without overrecording and distorting. Under those circunstances you are meant to turn it up. When high dynamic range movies (i.e., with magnetic analog, not optical analog, soundtracks (using the full, natural dynamic range of the original orchestra "live") were first relesed (in the 1950s) the average level sometimes was too soft in theaters that were not calibrated by the studio sound people. In a properly adjusted theater the dynamics were thrilling. The same movies sounded dull and flat in optical, and clean, detailed, but too soft in the uncalibrated theaters (often in the neighborhoods, rather than downtown).
  • It sounds like you may be using the sound system in your ordinary TV.. ?? That's usually not a very good way to enjoy Blu sound, or even DVD sound. To get some hint of the original dynamics and general sound quality, you might be better off with at least a dedicated 2 channel amp or receiver or integrated amp of sufficient power, some minimaly good speakers, and a modest subwoofer. It won't be 5.1 (or 6.1 or 7.1), but the usable dynamic range should change dramatically .. talk to a good dealer. It deosn't need to be expensive. Many years ago we bought a Yamaha 2 channel integrated amp. two inexpensive Yamaha speakers, and a discontinued Klipsch passive subwoofer with a balancing network that also served as a way to route the main signal through, cutting off frequencies below 150 Hz to the main speakers and sending them to the sub. We negotiated The Good Guys down quite a bit on price. That system still serves as a back-up, heavily used by my daughter and her friends, some 24 years later. And it provides very loud, clean, dynamic sound. For a bedroom TV, we got a Klipsch Pro-media system with sub. These are way above average for "computer speakers" but won't work well in a large room. We lived with it for more than a year, and finally decided we needed more treble, particularly at low volume at night when one of us was sleeping, so we added some used Electrovioce T-35 horn tweeters, crossover networks and balance controls, and they made the Promedia system come alive. Both of the above systems cost less than some people spend on interconnects and speaker wire, but then again, those folks are crazy!

Hm. I specifically remember in the DTS poll its supporters claimed people didn't have setups like Eddie...TVs like the Panasonic will accept and fully decode a Dolby 5.1 signal streamed to it, and with it's built in DSP give a pretty good simulated surround effect. Not to mention dynamic range control.

The better news is that Orci & Kurtzman didn't return, either.

Bring in Brooklyn Decker!

But I dunno Sam Witwicky dating Brooklyn would require too much of a suspension of disbelief.

They should've given Shia the boot too while they were at it.

It's not too late

I already pitched to a power that be to let me direct. I'm going to un-imagine the whole thing back exactly the way it should be. Hasbro will love it, the kids will have to buy all new toys!
