Since I already have the two disc DVD I'll very likely get the first release.

The extras on this new release is similar to the new release right?

Well I personally don't mind the grain, I love the look of Man On Fire for example which is very grainy. The main thing I'm looking at is the extra detail I'm seeing in the DNR version. I already have the first blu-ray release and I'm fine with it so I don't have any need to upgrade it now. My first copy of Predator was on VHS and I upgraded to the Blu-ray version so i've never seen any of the special features. I might upgrade in the future if it drops down to like about $7 or something like that.

I'm really hoping for the audio to have more impact.

Let me get this straight:

Camp A: thinks the original release looks great and is representative of the original grainy look of the film.

Camp B: thinks the original release was a little too grainy to the point that it detracted from the PQ at times.

Well, with both releases it looks like both camps will be happy so what's the problem? Does this new release somehow threaten the existence of the original mpeg2 version you already own? It looks to me like some people in this thread are just looking for a reason to complain, prove their elitism or just to insult others. All based on nothing more than personal preference.

Yeah I guess I will stop complaining first since I like the looks of both. I think the new one obviously looks better, but the old looks good in some shots. All this debating, and I am going to buy this. Thats another thing none of us have seen the new movie yet and we're debating about it like there is no tomorrow. I know some one on another forum who has seen this or has it already. Let me ask him about it.

I've looked at the screenshots and I'm really not sure which I like better. The new release has obviously had grain reduction, but the detail is still there. I'd prefer they didn't tamper with the movie at all, but this appears to have been carefully done. This isn't a disaster like Gladiator.

The problem with the new release is not simply personal preference, it's that the movie is supposed to look grainy. Shooting in the outdoors with uncontrolled lighting and generally poor 80's film stock makes for a grainy look. While the new transfer is slightly more detailed at times (most likely due to a higher bitrate and MPEG4 vs. MPEG2 encoding), Predator isn't supposed to look super smooth like that. The BD release should look as close to the theatrical experience as possible, even going to the original negative to ensure that the movie looks as intended.

Disney touched up their animated films for bluray but no one has a problem with that.

If by touching up you mean making them look like they're supposed to, why would anybody have a problem with that?

The new release is being advertised as having been "remastered." Applying DNR and scrubbing the image of detail is not a remaster. Also, there are some who were looking forward to this release, not only for a "remastered" (and thus implied superior) transfer, but also for the 2nd disc of supplemental material. So it's not about personal preference unless you're referring to those who prefer to get an "ultimate edition" with extras AND a superior picture and audio experience. For those of us that want those things will get none of those things.

I believe the grain should be intact on the Blu-ray releases of animation like Akira is, but in this case the point could be made that one would be viewing the animation cells themselves instead of the film.

In the case of animation DNR can be used effectively without ruining detail. I personally prefer a film like look but I can see the merits of either argument here.

As for live action, you can't apply excessive DNR without losing detail and/or making the film look unnatural.

I think the studios and BD player manufacturers should be touting the DNR controls available on a person's TV or BD player as a way to watch movies with the "crystal clear HD look", rather than ruining the movies for everyone.

Is anyone open to the idea that certain parts of the new one are going to look better and other scenes are going to look over DNR'd and worse? Just throwing it out there. I have mixed opinions based on some of the details in the screenshots

Except the shot of Arnold in the red shirt......

I do not understand? Are you trying to say I am calling you names or something? Can some one explain what he's talking about?

I don't think the majority of consumers have any idea about DNR and other such technical jargon that has become part of the online discussion.

You're right they don't, but we do and that's what matters since the hardcore collectors make up the bulk of the studios' optical disc revenue.

Talked to the guy who has this said it was the best he has seen it. Still it is personal preference. He even posted some screen caps of the predator. there is no comparisons though.
