If it came with a digital copy I would be all over this. Wish more old films came with them.

Yeah, not that the old copy looks great or anything, and I don't even mind a little DNR, but that still of Arnold is just, WOW! He looks like he's made out of clay.

Wow this debate is still going on?

I think there is nothing wrong to like either versions. Taste is all subjective and the only one that should care is the person buying the disc. What bothers me about the new release is hoping its not a trend to come for other catalog titles that studios think they need to refresh in order to get sales. Its one step forward and a major step backwards IMO. The use of using EE and DNR bothers me but not as much as the fact that the new version is now some ultra contrasted movie. I saw Predator in the theaters but honestly cannot remember how it looked other than it was dark and a gritty movie at the time. Owned couple DVD versions and the mpeg2 blu-ray version and to me that captured the general feel. By looking at some of the screen captures, I question if they were able to still retain the overall feel of the movie. Predator is and never was a traditional action/sci-fi movie in the sense where it wasn't filled with visuals and action like modern films of the genre.

Grain, whether it was intentional or not, its what we got in the theaters when it was released. I don't know if it was by accident but the movie worked and it still has a following as its evident in this thread. Spawned off a franchise I doubt the studio or director even thought about at the time of release. All I know is that none of the other movies have the same feel as the original. The grain and low light shots created the atmosphere better than any visual effects from a more modern release.

We can debate about this all day long. Waxy faces, is there more detail because of a higher encode, more detail with contrast turned up etc. What we know pretty damn sure is this new version is not close or anything like the original version that was out in the theaters.

Sadly, that might end up being the case. Many people here seem to like alterations done to the picture (DNR, artificial brightening, etc) as long as the bitrate meter is running high.

I'm honestly not too worried about future being completely DNR'd to death. Let's face it, a lot of people complained about the picture quality of Predator since it was first released.

Plus, FOX is not a studio that applied DNR to a lot of it's titles. Look at the X-Men Trilogy, 28 Weeks Later, Taken, the AVP movies and Predator 2. They all have grain and many of these movies were released on Blu-ray after the 1st edition of Predator came out.

I honestly think this is the result of a general consensus that Predator looks terrible. I owned the previous blu-ray and I'll be buying the new edition. To me, I can tell DNR has been applied, but not so much that I'm completely offended by the way the new edition looks.

They've also released Patton and The Longest Day, so I'm not ready to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Yes, I'm aware of these titles, but that's a few out of hundreds of other titles that have been released with no DNR applied to them. For the most part, FOX has been one of the best studios when it comes to their blu-rays. Disney, FOX and Universal are perhaps the best when it comes to their blu-rays... but that's just me

I saw the film in 70mm and I don't recall it being particularly grainy. I admit to being baffled by the enthusiasm by some posters to always want to see grain. For decades, cinematographers have tried their hardest to make films as free of grain as possible (when Technirama was introduced it was promoted as being "free from graininess"). This is now being turned on its head with this perverse liking for grain.

They've also released the Man With No Name Trilogy, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The French Connection.

IMO, the best of their Catalog releases have been MGM properties handled by Lowry, i.e. the Bond Films, but they have had other good releases or so i'm told(The Towering Inferno, The Sand Pebbes).

IIRC, there was some controversy about the Patton release having not been viewed until too late in the process after an over-zealous encoding engineer turned the dial to 11. As their Catalog titles continue to come out, it seems more likely that the engineers are either inconsistent in their quality control or Fox is not taking as much care of their releases as they should. This release certainly screams of a hyperactive encoder making the film look "better."

It's not that we want to see the grain, it's that we don't want to lose the fine detail in the image which is removed when the grain is removed.

Your post is very interesting to me since I watched the mpeg2 version yesterday night to see why some think its too grainy. I am kind of baffled that people have said its a "grainfest" or I like Predator minus the grain. Its not that grainy IMO. The movie as a whole is not as grainy as you think it would look from the beginning Fox logo.

Cliff who has seen a theatrical version says the mpeg2 is a accurate representation of the movie. Grain and all. Again my problem is not necessarily the removal of grain but the high contrast and brightness of the new version.

I agree. I never thought the current release was all that grainy. There are far worse movies out there as far as grain is concerned.
