The receiver manual states the following for the selective tone function: "The selective tone control is used to clearly reproduce ultra low and high frequencies." I don't want to use this if you think they will hurt the speakers in any way. I do like the sound of them with this turned off. My sub can handle any loss of low end for movies anyway, and they always had plenty of highs without the selective tone on as well. To be honest, I like the sound of Diana Krall's voice better without selective tone ... ![]() Last edited by Miker107; 06-28-2010 at 02:26 PM. |

Yes, we're on the same page. When I do use it I cut back on the separate bass and treble controls quite a bit. It gives the sound a little bit more punch on the bass end, but still blends quite well with the mids and highs. And the highs by the way are not overly exaggerated with this function turned on. They are very smooth and not in your face like you say.

However I used to have it at +2 on the treble, but then I started to notice that made them sound a little bright so I rolled it back to 0. Do what you like, I mean it won't drastically affect the speakers, but you may find that over time you like it off and the eq at 0..... or you may like a +2 bass, and a 0 treble.... however the overall design of the speaker will remain the same. |

Oh yea, I don't like it too bassy either, I like it to be smooth and deep and just enough to tell you it's there. I think that's why I love that big stand up bass in jazz music and old standards from 40's and 50's era. I Like big band orchestra stuff too. There is something about that rat, tat, tat of the symbol mixed with that smooth flowing bass, mingled with a little horn. I just love that sound for some reason. Yea, Energy speakers do very well with big band and jazz, plus very well with rock music. I listen to John Mayer, Alternative, Tori Amos, sometimes classical, norah jones and a bunch of other stuff.... I think they are not as well atuned to Classical... but they can do a very good job of it, just not as well as I have heard from higher end speakers, Totem, Dynaudio, Amphion, Dali....... I heard the newer CF-70s playing Michael Buble and I thought the standup bass was awesome.. between that and the drums there was really good deep bass... not super slam like Monitor Audio, but distinct. I actually use my C-300s set to large and 2-channel direct, and keep the sub off... I like the natural 2-channel music. Except when I am listening to Hip-Hop. I love my sub added into hip-hop, my sub HITS HARD. I played my sub for my dad who has B&W speakers and a JBL sub, I put on the New Star Trek and when they jump to warp.... Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom, boom, BOOM!!! He looked at me and said, that is A LOT of sub for your room...... I know you like your sub, but wait till you upgrade that to a Hsu, eD, Outlaw or SVS.... there are few comparable subs to them at their respective price ranges.... Right now I have Silversun Pickups playing,..... I love music. I listen to anything really.... just not country really. |

I contributed so much to add some gear to the new section that I was proposed to become a contributor by Iceman and blu Titan so that way I can add the pictures and add new speakers without requiring approval.
And they realize that the info I was posting was accurate. So now I can add any speakers I want with pix and description. That's all ![]() |

hello callas01,
i'm using c-100's all around with a sub & c-c100 center. i'm really thinking about getting a pair of c-300's. i love jazz also, but more of a movie watcher. their's a pair in philly around $500 in rosewood. i'll hold out for a pair in black with a better price. if you see any deals let me know. |

Unless you locate them on ebay or craigslist, it will be really hard to find the C-300s or C-500s anywhere. World Wide Stereo is a great place, I am sure you could talk them down $50-100, Heck I would tell them that they were selling them for $250 18 mos ago and $400 is a good deal for both of you. |

I was actually thinking the same thing about getting the Rainmakers.... Then adding the Rainmaker center and I could have a great front soundstage for the same price as getting the Staffs.
Then it would all be about getting a Very Good receiver or a decent receiver and an amp, but I am leaning towards Sherwood or NAD. |

What kind of budget are you looking into for your receiver. Have you considered Cambridge? http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/specif...Specifications 1799$ Just look at the THD at 1khz 100 watts all channels driven 120 watts per channels in stereo It drives 4 ohms Last but not least Bi-Amplification capable. LOL you have a better line of speakers than what we already have lol and you want the Totems now lol fantastic bokshelves indeed with a real role model in quality control from Totem, Dynaudio is the same way about their speakers.
It's just remarkable and whats great about them is they are made in Canada as Dynaudio is probably made all in Danemark. Nothing from those speaker makers is assembled in China. |

You should, they are a level above the Energys.... Oh, but they are so so so nice...

Roughly $1000 for a great receiver... and then I may or may not get the bookshelfs at the same time and run as a phantom center or just wait another year and then get new speakers and just have a much better receiver for the Energys, which is what I am thinking of doing. I have thought of Cambridge, but I doubt I will go that route..... |
