If you want to be cheap and don't mind a little work, there are people over at AVS that make their own discs and you can often find places to download theirs for free and burn them. But DVE is pretty popular, every BR enthusiast should own a copy for sure.

There are no shortage of test pattern discs out there for you people to learn this on your own.
on my set min meaning 0 to 5 and you cant tell a difference.....

Spears & Munsil Disc

The above disc also comes with any Oppo Blu-ray player. One of the great thigns about it is that the makers of the disc have their very own thread at this site to answer any of your questions:

If the "clueless consumers" you mention don't care, why pander to the J6Ps anyway? If they are so enlightened with their tolerance, it should be no problem for the studio's to accommodate the "picky videophiles" who helped launch the format in the first place.

Why would those noble everymen even notice?

Sure, and who's to say people who think Blu-rays aren't a big enough improvement over DVD are wrong? I've met far more people who don't think BR is worth it than people who complain about grain in movies.

So now this discussion has degenerated to people's right to have opinions?

What is this, middle-school civics class?

Everybody enjoy your opinions, but remember this: In the real world there are these annoying little things called facts. Panic accordingly...

Thank god! At least that's a plus for the new release.

His TV must be set for Vivid, or the iPhone is post-processing the shit out of the pics.

they usually do accommodate the picky videophiles....its only every once in awhile that a blu comes out that infuriates the grain lovers to this extent.

It was a rhetorical question as people who want a faithful transfer are not "picky". If you honestly believe that, why do you even care about BD? By that logic DVD should be just fine for you and the others who want to call us names like "picky".

I wasn't please with the contrast tinkering on this new release. But I will say at least they didn't go as overboard with it like the DNR.

and I give them props for not going more overboard with edge enhancement to try and compensate for the heavy DNR as is often the case.

So for all the complaining, yes this release could have been much much worse.

Still the DNR is at near Evil Dead II levels here.

I dont care about faithful transfers.......I usually dont remember how a movie looked in the cinema when I saw it 20 years ago. I like Blu because of the more vivid colors and detail that it shows....despite it having DNR or not.

And is being called picky that much of an insult from a group that calls others "Joe Six Packs" ?

It's the usual fanboy hypocrisy. Elevating yourself, while trashing those you disagree with. Pay it no mind.

Uh... you do know that detail is in the grain and when DNR is applied, the detail tends to disappear. And dont tell me there is more detail in the new scrubby-doobie-do version of Predator (If you think there is, you probably love that Reservoir Dogs transfer) as every image I have seen looks like they smeared Vaseline over the lens.

All of the controversy is making me want to buy the new release just to compare it with the original release . It's a heated and interesting discussion, but hard to appreciate it without having viewed both editions.
