Default BestBuy and Target want your used games!

Target announced this yesterday.

Quote:
Another major retail chain wants your used videogames.

Target today announced it will soon allow customers to trade in a number of electronic devices, including new or used iPhones, iPods, cell phones and videogames, to receive in-store credit that can be used towards other purchases.

The company noted this new program "encourages guests to be eco-friendly," implying the electronics will be recycled and not resold. We contacted Target to get clarification.

It will launch in Northern California on August 24 with additional stores joining the program in September, and will be available in approximately 850 stores by the end of the year.

Target joins retailers GameStop, Best Buy, and Walmart as a destination to sell back used videogames. GameStop said on its latest earnings call that while the company is taking this new competition seriously, it has yet to see an impact on sales.
BestBuy then followed with today's statement.

Quote:
Responding to yesterday's news that Target would soon allow customers to trade in used videogames for credit at their store, rival retailer Best Buy today announced its own trade-in program is going nationwide later this week.

The program will start in roughly 600 Best Buy stores across the country with additional stores being added soon after.

"The expansion of our trade-in program reaffirms our commitment to consistently pursue new ways to bring a better gaming experience to consumers," said Best Buy's Chris Homeister, senior vice president and general managers.

"Fall marks the launch of several highly-anticipated gaming titles and new technology, and we're thrilled to provide gamers with innovative ways to connect with the games they love."

As a special offer beginning Sunday, August 29, customers who trade in games will receive a $20 Best Buy Gift Card as part of a promotion.

Best Buy says in-store credit can be used to purchase anything at the store, and stores will soon begin selling pre-owned titles as well.

Correction: Best Buy says the announcement has been corrected saying the promotion is for a $20 gift card only. It will not be on top of the trade-in value.

Well, the Best Buy in Canada (and the Futureshop) have been doing this for a while now lol. I think you can get up to $40 or something.

I didnt know either store had a trade-in program. I wonder how Best Buy would determine how much each game is worth. Anyone know? Similar to Gamestop?

I guess it depends primarily on how new or old the game is. At Gamestop or EB games, if the trade in value is worth $8-$14, you can 'pump it up' to get $30 off a used or new game worth $49.99 or higher. I've used the pump up it up before and LOVED it haha.

The best prices that I have found for trading in used games is at Amazon...they pay pretty good and also pay for the shipping to send them the games the only downside is that you get am Amazon GC as payment...

Well bad news and I won't be doing any trade ins with BB anytime soon.

Here's the official site:

http://www.bestbuy.com/gametradein

Just checked the console estimator to see what they would give for 60GB PS3 console and it was a joke.

Yeah, I read that Best Buy gives you crappy turn-in credit for used games versus Target or Gamestop, I think it was on Kotaku or someplace. But basically, Best Buy will give you $19 trade-in for Red Dead Redemption, Gamestop $25, and Target $26.74.

This is all pointless to me at this point, since there are no trade-in locations for Target or Best Buy here in Jacksonville, FL and I'll be damned if I give Gamestop any of my games. That's what Amazon and Goozex are for, for my game-trading/selling needs

+1 They're crazy! They'll only give you $110 for a 60G PS3? You're not alone, they're only offering $125 for the 120GB PS3. What a ripoff.

So what does this statement mean? Correction: Best Buy says the announcement has been corrected saying the promotion is for a $20 gift card only. It will not be on top of the trade-in value

So on Sunday, does this mean I won't get a $20 gift card for trading in a used PS3 game?

This is a complete joke.

40 GB PS3 $62

I got $200 from Gamestop when they did there trade-in over the summer.

I'm still a little confused by this , is BB and Target going to sell used games and merchandise in store ?
Sure I know they do open box or simple returns and sell those but this is used stuff.
This will probably fail, but then again Gamestop still gives you pennies for your used games and jacks them up 400% for resale.

I liked it better when Best Buy priced matched their new games for the used prices of GS, that was a sweet deal.

Just for a short time, in fact my local store was the only one that did it in the entire country, it was sweet, I think BB was just testing the waters.

I saw some used games for sale at Best Buy today. I didn't take a close look or anything, but they had a yellow price sticker (not the typical BB price sticker) on them, and they were on the bottom shelf in the corner.

I think this thread would be better suited in the general GAMING forum as it pertains to all games and not just the PS3..

(just a thought)

What difference would it make? A thread is a thread.

So, no matter what I trade in I get a $20 GC? That could be helpful for me getting rid of PS1 games.
