Do you think the name "Blu-ray" will have any impact on this format war? Will it create interest amongst consumers who are curious as to what it means? Will it cause confusion?

Do you think the name "HD DVD" will have any impact on this format war? Will people assume it is the next step in the evolution of media since it has an "HD" prefix?

Are there too many syllables in "HD DVD" (5) versus "Blu-ray" (2)?

We can look at the adoption of DVD. Even though it was the successor of VHS (which looked and operated nothing like the DVD), its name was easy to pronounce and it resembled its musical counterpart (the CD).

How hard will it be to train the consumer into relating "Blu-ray" with movies, versus the regurgitated "DVD" with "HD" prefix. Are we at a point in this format war where if someone says they purchased a movie in "HD", another person will ask "In Blu-ray or HD DVD?" Or do the masses still assume HD DVD is a DVD in Hi-Def and Blu-ray is some mysterious format?

No confusion. It makes you want to know what it is. HD DVD causes confusion by making Joe 6-Pack think it'll work on his regular DVD player. Heck, 'Blu-Ray' it even sounds futuristic - you want to know what it is.

Errr, I mentioned that, lol. But like I said, they will think it is HD stuff that will work on their current DVD player - and throw a hissy fit and beat their wife or something when it doesn't work.

Americans are a lazy people. Blu-Ray rolls off the tongue. HD-DVD...not so much.

HD-DVD rolls off the tongue poorly. There's times when I hate Toshiba so much because I might not have to buy their product but I still have to utter its' incredibly awkward name when I want to speak about how poor it is.

I think the ONLY thing HD might have is that most people, including websites refer to Blu and HD as High Def. So they have that working for them. I know when I talk to some people they think the only High Def DVD's are HD DVD simply because the name.

I agree with the idea that HD DVD causes confusion. This is borne out on amazon reviews and elsewhere, where consumers with a DVD player and HDTV buy and HD DVD and later discover it is incompatible with their player.

Blu-ray doesn't have that problem.

But once your start counting sales, it's all even.

Blu-ray Sales : 10,
HD-DVD Sales : 5
So it's 15 to 15 or something.

Ive had many sales people (back late spring) at BB and FS (Futureshop) tell me that Blu-Ray is too hard to remember than HD-DVD.
I can get my 2 year old nephew to say Blu-Ray easily

Of course it helps when he picks Cars from my collection

I think the term High definition is known to many as Hi-def or HD, then you get DVD into the mix, and to those unaware of Blu-ray, well HD DVD is simply a more understandable name, one they know is a hi-def movie.

Although I think its cooler, the name Blu-ray might confuse people.

The joe six pack consumer knows:

HD= High definition

DVD= movies

HD+DVD= High definition movies

Blu= ? dont you spell blue with an "E"

Ray= duh?

you get my point.

But they all better learn how to spell Blu soon!
