Wikipedia has it slated for a release date of May 27, 2011. I just gotta pretend this movie doesn't exist for six more months, but i can't stop thinking about it and i don't wanna burn myself out on that trailer either.

Probably because it was in the wee hours of the morn. Well, actually you live in Australia, don't you? I have no idea what time that makes it there. You know us Americans; the rest of the world doesn't exist till we start dropping bombs on you.

Nina slowly approaches the brink of insanity as she undergoes her intoxicating metamorphosis until the breathtaking climax. The film pulls the audience in deeper and deeper until you lose all sense of reality. The experience is only heightened by Mansell's immersive and horrifying orchestral score. The choreography was simply superb and Portman's ease and skill in dance speaks volumes of her effort and enhances her dramatic performance. The ballet, Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, is twisted yet elegant. Even while witnessing rehearsals throughout the film, the final performance will render you speechless. Prepare to have both questions and answers cleverly delivered to you in a fashion only director Darren Aronofsky can construct. Black Swan is the best psychological thriller I have seen in years, though I am sure I am just starting to scratch its surface.

Didnt open here this weekend.

Is there still going to be a wider opening on the 22nd?

I had no expectations going in because I had seen the first trailer one time and that was pretty much it. So I was a mostly blank slate going in.

From the very beginning of the film when we first see Bale with that "Dicky look" I knew, "This is going to be a very different role for him." And boy was I right...but I'll get back to that later.

I'm not a boxing fan in the slightest, so I didn't know the history behind this movie. I didn't know who Micky Ward was, didn't know what the character would be like, what the family would be portrayed like, or any of that stuff.

That said, I highly enjoyed what I got. I really felt for Wahlberg's Micky character, I felt for Bale's Dicky character. I was angry when the mother would ignore Micky. I was incredibly saddened and shocked
[Show spoiler]when the cop shattered Micky's hand.
I was overjoyed when Dicky
[Show spoiler]left the crack house without going inside or even entertaining the notion on his way to Charlene's house.

Or in other words, I CARED for the characters. I cared for their individual stories and journeys they had to go through to get to the end of the film. It all worked perfectly for me. Not a single tiny complaint.

Now, the acting.

One of the three things I knew going in, "Christian Bale was supposed to be fantastic."
Turns out it was true. He really was fantastic. I've seen 15 of his films now and I have to say that I firmly believe that this is his best performance I have seen (note: I have not seen American Psycho or The Machinist yet). He was incredible. He was just so out there and into the character. But being the character is nothing new to him. What impressed me the most was how incredibly candid and extroverted he was in this film. The man himself is very much an introvert so doing this role must have been some serious work to put himself out there like that. Every other performance is much more subdued and pulled back; and he's wonderful at that. But Dicky was just so over the top, 100%, full speed ahead all the time. I absolutely loved it, every minute of it. My favorite of his performances is still The Prestige but this one is definitely his best work. I'm not an awards guy really, I don't put any stock in a movie being great or a performance being great BECAUSE they have an award; but I do like to see it when something I feel is award worthy is recognized, and I surely hope he gets the recognition he deserves for this performance.

Even as much as I loved Bale's performance, he wasn't overshadowing in the slightest. No one touched him performance wise in my opinion, not even close, but they other main cast was strong as well.

CZAR's boy Wahlberg turned in a great job. As out there as Bale had to play Dicky, Wahlberg had to play Micky the polar opposite of that. He pulled it off superbly in my opinion; a very strong and, I guess you could say, "heartfelt" effort. I got the impression that he REALLY cared about this character.

Amy Adams wasn't as good as those two but she was no slouch either. I was impressed with her work as well. She also worked quite well with Wahlberg I thought. I cheered a little when she
[Show spoiler]starting beating the crap out of one of those sisters!

One thing I loved about how the movie was filmed was how they made sure the coverage of the fights had a different look than the rest of the film. I like when that kind of thing is done. The first thing that came to mind when I saw that was Rocky Balboa and how they shot the final fight at the end with HD cameras to give it that HDTV look. In this case it wasn't anything like that sort of look that looked...how do I put it...less textured I guess. A little more blurry. That older tv look. I loved it.

If you are thinking of seeing this movie, I highly recommend checking it out when and if you can. Great writing and acting all the way. Couldn't have been happier with my two hours in that theater seat.

I've been reevaluating some of my previous 5/5 ratings from the past, and I've dropped some of them down, but in this case, the movie deserves it in my opinion.

Rating - 5/5
Glad to hear you enjoyed the show. I might hit this tonight since The Black Swan isnt in my area yet.

Turns out its very good.

I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with Turn of the Screw, but the film is based on that novella.

The basic premise is, a rich uncle hires a young woman to be a governess in his country estate to his niece and nephew and be in complete authority of the estate so as to not have to bother him...ever. She goes to the estate and things are fine and dandy, she likes the children and the children like her. But that peacefulness does not last long....watch the movie to find out why

The performance from Deborah Kerr as the governess Miss Giddens is very good. The film has some ambiguity to it, specifically involving her character, and she handles it well. She does great with the calm and collected demeanor of the character for the majority of the film, but she also really makes you feel it when she is frightened or in shock. Great performance.

The children....the children. My gosh were they sooooo creepy!!! Some great work from them. Like Kerr, they handle the different facets of the characters exquisitely. Pamela Franklin freaked the hell out of me a few times and Martin Stephens really brings it in his final scene of the film.

I like the camera work in the film regarding the
[Show spoiler]ghosts. You never see them "materialize" or fade away like you would normally see. When they are shown they are either already there or emerge from the shadows. It really helps to bring the question, are they really there, or is she a raving lunatic and imagining them because we always are shown them from her perspective as soon as she sees them.
Very good.

Knowing the story beforehand didn't take away from my enjoyment of the film, I was very interested in what was going on and hearing the next line of dialog, or seeing the next scene even though I knew what was coming. It is all well written, well acted, well captured and well directed.

I would definitely recommend checking this one out, a very interesting film with some strong performances.

Black Swan (2010)

Overall this is very solid film. I still think that Aronofsky's two previous films The Fountain and The Wrestler are better, but I feel like I could end up in the minority with that opinion. I feel that in order to get a complete grasp of the film, I'm going to see it a couple of more times when it comes out on Blu-ray.

Natalie Portman is absolutely fantastic. She successfully carries over her tense emotions over to the viewer that causes you to be on the edge of your seat. Coupled with Clint Mansell's dark soundtrack it makes for an excellent combo.

In the spoiler I have a few theories about the film, so don't click it if you haven't seen the film. It's quite long:

[Show spoiler]I think Black Swan deals with the a person's fear of failure and to a lesser extent, success. I think the white swan is characterized by Nina's safe nature that prefers technique and perfection. The black swan is ultimately risk, a performance that is more dynamic and loose. Throughout the film Thomas LeRoy (Vincent Cassel) repeatedly tells Nina that the only thing holding her back is her own mind. Her mind constantly conjures up reasons why she can't succeed, most notably in the form of a double taking her spot (Lily/Mila Kunis). Nina gets progressively paranoid that everyone is out to get her, especially since Thomas chose Nina to replace Beth earlier in the film. We also see Nina project her own image onto Lily at various points throughout the film. Overall I feel that Nina conjures up reasons that she won't succeed because she doesn't want to end up like her own mother, a failed ballet dancer. In a sense, if she did fail, she would turn into the monster of her mother who pushed her so hard to succeed.

Another theme I caught onto was Aronofsky's stance on Hollywood in general. The parallels between Hollywood and the ballet studio are quite frequent. The whole notion of an older actress being replaced by a new and younger actress should ring plenty of bells. As well should the sexual exploitation of women. This is evidenced by Thomas making Nina earn her role for the Swan first by kissing, then seducing her and ultimately having sex with her. While they never do have sex, it is strongly hinted when they head back to Thomas' place for drinks. I've dealt with some professors who have worked in Hollywood and have definitely told me that this does occur. I feel that there is definitely substance to this theory but I feel it requires a few more viewings to expand upon it.

Also another theory you could easily draw up is Nina's struggle with her dark side. Nina constantly seems to be bottling herself up and preventing herself from indulging into darker territory. My only problem with the theory is we never fully understand what exactly this dark past is, we don't know where the epicenter of her problems originate.

Those are just a few theories on it. I don't think that there is necessarily a "correct" theory. Anyone who has watched The Fountain should know this. I think there is substantial evidence for a number of theories.

My only problem with the film necessarily is that it was a tad predictable at the end. I was able to tell about 20 minutes before the end what would happen. Overall it's a very good film, but I didn't love it.

4/5

I absolutely love this movie, especially since I don't have a lot of Christmas movies, I'd probably watch it more often if Bernie Mac weren't dead. Will watch National Treasure next. 4/5 all around for that one.

Have you noticed some of the reviews here for Black Swan are calling it the best psychological thriller of all time?

How anyone could be so IE as to have no desire to see this, is beyond me.

I've read some of the reviews, seen clips from the film and saw the trailer a couple times...and it just doesn't interest me in the slightest still
It's not flipping that switch.

Good to see positive reaction for The Fighter. I was a little unsure how it would fair once it was released.

I plan on seeing Tron: Legacy tonight and follow it up with The Fighter tomorrow, True Grit on Tuesday and The King's Speech next weekend.

I hate war, but i got tons of war movies. Weird, huh?

And honestly, how could you hate Portman? Any specific reasons/roles for hating such a cute little talented pixie.

Oh wait, i just remembered. You're the guy that watches Michael Jackson's "This is it" everyday, right? But you hate dancing and everything related to it? C'mon already. No one is gonna revoke your already suspect Man Card.

I saw Inception is down to $16.99, and I have a friend waiting to buy the DVD from me for $10 so I snagged myself a copy.

I'll watch it Tuesday night so that I can reevaluate the film and see if my 4/5 stands or if it goes up.

I'm probably gonna get rid of my single disc and buy the one with Hans Zimmer's complete score on it, if anyone is interested in a sale/trade. Maybe i can trade it to Squid for his newly "purchased" Justin Beiber CD?

Is that the one from Best Buy? I wonder why they would even offer a single disc version...especially since it was $1 more than the 2BD/DVD pack from Target when it was released

I don't think you'll get him to give that up. Squid loves the Beib.
