When I couldn't get Sex and Lucia on Blu-ray I called to complain and they said it was because the company (Palm Pictures?) wouldn't sell it to them. I took this to mean the company wouldn't sell it to Netflix for next to nothing so Netflix took a page from the Walmart book of monopoly marketing and said to hell with you. Naturally, smaller distributors can't afford to make the sort of price concessions that larger companies do so the Criterions of the world will suffer. This is yet another example of how Netflix isn't reacting to the market (as they claim) so much as directing it.
There are tons that are unavailable on Blu-ray and it been going on for a while now. It frustrates me because I want to see them BEFORE buying them to be safe.

Just curious: are you purchasing Solaris? I ask because it's another film that takes its time to get going.

Yes, Wages does have 20-30 minutes of ennui to being the film but I think it's vital to establishing the desperation felt by the characters. The film doesn't really take off until they get in the trucks.

Thanks everyone for the T.V. info, and I will end it saying I will look for a plasma. My LCD has a dark line in it (only can see it on some backgrounds) so I think the bulb might be going. I have a dark room so a plasma would be good. So this is me ending the T.V. debate for Beta.

I haven't seen Solaris and I never blind buy. I've heard a lot about it so I will be getting it off Netflix...if I can. Re Wages: I know I owe it to myself to sit through the whole thing. I'll get around to it eventually.

Unavailable or "very long wait"?

Yeah jcs...the old man knows plasma!

My Panasonic is actually a 1080P and the same TV that PowellPressburger owns...a very good first HDTV.

I've got a Pioneer Elite Pro 111FD that I decided to buy before they were completely discontinued (Pioneer plamsas, that is). Got a pretty good price on it, as I couldn't have afforded it, when they were first released!

Which Elite do you have? I hope you're enjoying yours as much as I am!

EDIT: Sorry...didn't realize that this had gotten a bit out of control with the TV talk. Guess that's what happens when you forget to read ahead.

I love my Panasonic Plasma... If i had to buy another I wouldn't hesitate. Even Consumer Reports(Or maybe it was CNET?) said the panasonic plasma was the best 3D Tv out there also.

Thanks in advance!
I'm surprised that no one mentioned "Everlasting Moments". Not only did I really enjoy it, but it's one that I want to show my wife soon, as I think a woman can relate to it even more than a man can.

I'd love for Criterion to release Abel Gance's Napoléon - the 330 minute version with the Carl Davis score. Coppola for some reason is suppressing this version in favour of his father's inferior version.

[Show spoiler]I've tried tracking down some of those fabled DVD-Rs to no avail

you really have to wonder what the deal is with Napoleon.
I mean Coppola will be dead by the time they release the damn movie;
just ridiculous those parties can't come to an agreement regarding releasing that seminal classic.

I don't see how Coppola as a filmmaker can't put himself in the position of Gance, Brownlow etc.

Unavailable period, as in they dont stock it. It sucks.

The following titles are not available on Blu-ray...

Black Narcissus
The Red Shoes
Paths of Glory
Sex and Lucia
Broadcast News
The Double Life of Veronique
Black Orpheus
The Darjeeling Limited
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
Seven Samurai
Charade
Shock Corridor
Modern Times
Videodrome
Army of Shadows
The Night of The Hunter
Crumb
The Naked Kiss

And most of the upcoming releases dont indicate that they will be available on Blu-ray in the future.

The most annoying thing for me about the film was that Coppola soundtrack. Drove me crazy after a while.

Who knows maybe it will appear on disc some day, preferably before I die.
