I had tried W40K Dawn Of War a few years back, and there too had been disappointed. Despite high praises, I am afraid that Dawn of War II went the same road (all about action, little development/ actual long term strategy).

Am I right in thinking so?

Not sci-fi or fantasy, but check out Company of Heroes.

Best RTS of the past 5+ years, both single and multiplayer.

C&C4 sucked, no 3 was good though. Also check out Dawn of War 1 and 2 and of course starcraft 2.

What about Starcraft II? I would also suggest Starcraft but that's old news now that the second one is here
