Default 5.1 issues...HELP!

I've got a Panasonic DMP-BD10AK player and an older Kenwood receiver I bought back in 2000. My Kenwood has Dolby Digital 5.1 and I have an optical cable out of my player into my receiver.
When I watch some movies, my Kenwood only detects 5.1 on the previews. When the movie starts, it switches off automatically to just 3 channel stereo.
Am I doing something wrong, or is it time to update my sound system? I have everything hooked up the same way my old upconverting DVD player was. I never had problems until I bought the DMP-BD10AK.

Help!

After the movie starts, press the display button and check out which audio track is playing... you may have to change tracks to get what you want

PCM audio will only go through optical as a stereo signal.

You need to hook it up using the analog outs, or choose DD 5.1 tracks in the movie

I did that. It's set to True HD by default. After switching to LPCM, it sounds better, but won't detect 5.1.

I've got the player setup PCM on optical.

I'm stumped.
