Default Official Wireless Stereo Headset for PS3

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/...tation.Blog%29

Quote:
Do you hear that sound? It’s the sound of the enemy approaching your bunker. Only you’ve heard them way before they’ve even seen you and now your commandos are ready to unload. What’s your advantage? It’s simple – the official PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset – the latest addition to the PlayStation 3 accessories family.

The official PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset will be available for $99.99 (MSRP) at retailers nationwide this September. Many more of your favorite franchises, such as Killzone and Gran Turismo, were also designed for surround sound audio. Featuring 7.1 virtual surround sound, the Wireless Stereo Headset lets you hear all the minor in-game audio clues clearly, whether you are in a firefight in a first-person shooter game or racing for the checkered flag.
Designed with comfort in mind for hours of gameplay, it’s the perfect addition to your PlayStation experience. Connecting the Wireless Stereo Headset with PS3 is made easy with the included USB Wireless Adapter. Precise volume controls and accessible microphone mute make it so you never have to interrupt gameplay to fumble for buttons. You can easily stay informed about battery status, sound controls, etc. with on-screen headset status updates. On top of that, the Wireless Stereo Headset also offers the highest quality voice chat for crystal clear online conversations. The mic is retractable so you can put it away if you just want to listen to music or play a single player game.

We’re very excited to be able to offer you yet another new way to get immersed in the game. Be sure to keep checking the Blog for more information soon.

I doubt BT would be able to handle the 7.1, and putting it in just for the mic would raise the costs.

Sony PC gaming mics were amazing that they released last year. Glad to see that they are bringing these to PS3 now as well. I was actually really shocked that the PC ones weren't made to work with the PS3.

This new headset gave me an idea. It would be nice if we could pair our BT enabled phones with the PS3 and pause our game and answer our phones with whatever mic and headset we have configured on the PS3.

Hmm, might be useful for when my parents visit. All I ever get from my mum is 'that's too loud'

Wireless only? No thanks, I prefer to stay away from wireless headphones.

Looks like it would be heavy. I have to agree, the design is terrible

I'm hoping this will double as a USB headset for a laptop. Be fun playing CS:S and TF:2 and be able to play PS3 games without disturbing the neighbors. Then again, the neighbors don't complain.

I like the overall design, it would be preferable if the microphone tucked all the way in but I suspect the larger section doesn't retract or swivel in. The chunky band is probably comfier than my ancient HD600's, with the weight spread over a larger surface area. I don't know if Sony's virtual surround mixing's any good, assuming this uses a technology they've used in other headphones.

Key Features
  • The Official PS3™ Wireless Stereo Headset
  • 7.1 digital surround sound* enables you to hear the enemy before they see you
  • Crystal clear conversations to strategize with teammates
  • Breathable oversized earpads allow for hours of comfortable gameplay
  • Stay informed with exclusive on-screen headset status updates**
  • Enjoy hi-fidelity sound while watching your favorite movie
  • Easily access headset Volume and Mic Mute controls
  • Retractable microphone for use only when you need it
* Surround sound on the PS3™ requires system software version 3.70 or later. Surround Sound does not work with Blu-ray Disc movies
**On-screen headset updates available on PS3™ systems only

I wouldn't get too excited. The headset isn't launching until September. We probably won't be getting 3.70 until August. Aren't we due for major release soon (ie. a 4.x firmware)?

Wireless means recharging or batteries. No thanks. As it is I need 2 controllers so I can switch when the charge goes down on one. And how many times have you been in a game and someone says, my bluetooth is dying? They charge it for 5 minutes, come back on for a few, it dies, repeat. I have a Turtle Beach USB Headset, works great, over a year old. I can hear everything and people always remark on how well they can hear me. I'd be curious what the audiophiles of head-fi.org will think of the sound quality though. My Turtle Beach has simulated surround. It adds a lot of hiss, but does seem like a wider soundstage.
300 reviews on Amazon, 4/5 star average rating. $60.

Not everyone plays a few feet away from their PS3.

Including me. I sit about 12- 15 feet away. Cable length included is 16 feet. You can buy extensions on Amazon, its just USB cable. And it works with the XBOX and PC.

And it comes in a 7.1 model too. Again, you can use it with the PS3, XBOX and PC. Like to see a review that compares the two when the Sony comes out.
