I was fully agreeing with what you were saying.

This summer has had, and still has to come, some great movies. But having them all slammed together in this summer is really hard to get a feel on how well movies are actually doing. If they had been more spaced out, there is a better chance some of this movies could have done better...But really, there is no way to know now. Things like X-Men, Kung Fu Panda and probably Green Lantern, will have to heavily rely on the home video sales to make a lot of it's money back...

Estimate for Super 8 revised upwards . A $23 million weekend for X-Men FC would be a 58% drop from the previous weekend and disappointing for the movie...hopefully, it will do better than that.

Quote:
FRIDAY 9:30 PM UPDATE: It's encouraging to see an original movie overperforming at the North American box office for $12 million Friday and what should be $35M from 3,379 locations. "Sweeeeeeet," a Paramount exec emailed me tonight. These grosses do not include the $1 million which the Bad Robot/Amblin/Paramount movie Super 8 from JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg made from Thursday's sneaks in about 335 theaters. Everyone is very skeptical of the reputed $50 million cost but that's Paramount's claim and the studio is sticking to it. Refined numbers and full analysis later. Fox's week-old X-Men: First Class is a strong #2 making $7.5M Friday going to $23M for the weekend and a $97M cume. meanwhile, never underestimate the film taste of the public for sequels because #3 Warner Bros' The Hangover Part 2 has now grossed over $200m in its first 16 days of release. Today's gross of $6M gives HO2 a domestic cume of $204m and bragging rights for the largest grossing film of 2011. "With Green Lantern, Horrible Bosses, and Harry Potter 7B lined up and ready to go, WB is positioned to regain the industry market share (4th year in a row) by the end of summer," a Warner Bros exec just emailed me. Refined numbers and full analysis later.

As far as winning the yearly box office race for the studios (through the Summer), Warner will probably take it due to the number of movies it releases. Hangover II started very strong but it is fading a lot faster than the first one. Green Lantern and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 look huge (specially HP). Horrible Bosses could surprise.

Thus far, Paramount is in the lead with Transformers Dark Side of the Moon and Captain America:The First Avenger to go. Super 8 appears to be performing very well. It has been a bad year for Sony from all aspects, but I do think it has a good chance to come up big with either Bad Teacher or Zookeeper..maybe both. Sony is probably counting more on Smurfs 3D, but all along I have been smelling a bomb with that one.

Universal needed some hits in the worst way and got two awesome box office winners in Fast Five and Bridesmaids. However, Larry Crowne looks like a huge bore and can only hope in attracting the older crowds as it goes against Transformers DSOTM. Does anyone else think that Tom Hanks looks silly with an old face and jet black hair? Another Universal release Cowboys vs Aliens...frankly looks like a bust to me, even with all of the star power.

For Disney, it scored humongous $$$ with POTC 4 which is currently $813 million worldwide. Can Disney find success with Cars 2? Fox tried its hand with a reboot of X-Men minus Wolverine and did not find much success at the box office. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is coming for Fox, but it has little chance to make box office waves.

Studio weakling Lionsgate is afraid of the big boys in the Summer Season and has nothing to offer until Conan The Barbarian in August.

Biggest winners through the Summer:

Paramount, Warner Brothers, Disney, Universal, Fox, Sony, and Lionsgate.

Bad Teacher looks pretty funny, I'm kind of looking forward to that one. Lol, "Transformers: DARK of The Moon" maybe? (Pink Floyd playing at your house tonight? )

Cowboys & Aliens, as bizarre a concept as ever, actually looks good to me. Maybe "because" it's so different, but with the main players involved (& ILM doing the Effects), I'm thinking it'll be pretty big.

As for Tom Hanks, well...
[Show spoiler]Lol - come on now, you know Everyone in Hollywood drinks that special elixir that just takes the Grey right out of their hair!! That's one of MY big pet peeves, how nobody on TV or in most movies (aside from a few exceptions, yea) has Any Grey hair showing. They're all over 40, perfectly coifed Black or Brown or Blond hair, No Wrinkles it seems. Yea, it's all "Natural" of course.

Top Five for Friday. POTC On Stranger Tides and The Hangover Part II both over $200M domestic. After today The Hangover II will become the top box office movie of 2011 besting Fast Five. First Class trails Thor's box office by a wide margin. Thor's second Friday was $9,140,767. I am guessing Thor will end up with close to $180M domestic and First Class $150 - $155M. Lets see what DC can do next week with Green Lantern's debut. For those expecting an awesome run for Super 8, it is unlikely. Both Super 8 and First Class got a Cinema Score of 'B+" which is very good, but not great. Noit saying that Super 8 will be a disppoinment, it will be very successful. A final tally of $125M domestic is my guess for Super 8. It is a very crowded Summer and after a couple of weeks, movies lose their buzz.

1 SUPER 8 $12,200,000

2 X-MEN: FIRST CLASS $7,600,000

3 THE HANGOVER PART II $5,740,000

4 KUNG FU PANDA 2 $4,610,000

5 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES $3,130,000
