Well it's licensed TO them by Universal, who owns the copyright for Brazil in the States. Universal could license it to whoever they wanted, really, or put it out themselves.

That's why a lot of people thought the new Universal blu-ray would include the 142 minute cut, just like the old Universal DVD did (even though it was mis-labeled as the 132 minute theatrical cut).

Oh well, guess a lot of folks will holdout for the Criterion version now...

Not sure if you can put it quite that way: it is the European Cut which was printed and released. I saw a copy at University of Texas in the early 90's, unless they pulled more footage since... although that cut was handled by Fox at the time.

There are at least four versions existing: the 142 minute international cut, the 94 minute "Love Conquers All" cut, the 132 minute US release cut, and the 142 minute director's cut (which is essentially the international cut with a few modifications).

My apologies if it has been mentioned already, but Fox is releasing Brazil on Blu-ray Disc in the UK on 10/24/2011. Is it safe to assume that this will be the international cut? If so that would be half the cuts released on BD with hopefully Criterion picking up the slack with their eventual release.

Can the reviewer please let us know if you got the time for the film off based on the packaging or from the time on the disc itself. If it is from the packaging, can you double check? Especially since the last release on DVD stated it was the 132 min cut but on the disc was the 143 director's cut.

So, wait, there's two 142 minute versions?

Anyway, it looks like I'll be waiting for the Criterion for this one.

We have a review, lots of comments but nobody's actually timed the running time?

Come on, take someone a few minutes. Thanks! If it's the Criterion cut (maybe we'd be best to refer to it as that) then it'll be the only Blu-ray I buy.

The UK has only ever had the longer 142min cut although I'm told there's a few minor differences so not the Criterion/new "Director Cut".

The Universal blu-ray contains the 132 minute theatrical cut. That's the actual runtime of the disc, not a misprint on the box (like the DVD).

If you want a longer cut, wait for Criterion or get the UK version when it comes out in the fall.

How do you know this?

For what it's worth here is a PM exchange between myself and the reviewer of this disc. He never specifically said he timed it off of the disc vs just looking at the package.

From what I understand, there are 3 cuts of this film, 132 min theatrical version, 142 minute directors cut, and a 90-something minute "love conquers all" version.

Your review mentions this cut being 132 minutes. Can you confirm that? As far as I am aware this version has not been released on optical disc format before and would make this Universal release unique to the Criterion versions.

He never responded again after that.

I have the disc. Like I already said, and like the reviewer already confirmed for you - 132 minutes.

Ah, well that makes it a bit easier to wait for Criterion's release.

Y'know, you could have said "I have the disc and I have checked the actual running time" so we would have known that in the first place. Considering the error with the Universal DVD packaging I don't think a little skepticism was unwarranted. And reviewers have been known for more egregious errors than simply repeating a runtime from the package.

But anyway, thanks for confirming.

dvdbeaver review is up for anyone interested.
I know I will be buying this bd, but like everyone else I'm incredibly bummed that it isn't the 142 minute version.

Criterion owns the 142 minute "Director's" cut apparently... it was done for them. So most likely it will be coming out by them in the near future after the Universal release hits shelves.

Criterion doesn't own a single film - they have never financed the production of a film, and simply license temporary rights to existing films for home media release. Universal owns Brazil, and has even previously released the director's cut on DVD (the DVD box erroneously states the theatrical runtime, but in fact contains the 142 minute version).

Is it even known if Criterion still has the rights to the film?

Yes, I will. Waiting for it to go on sale, though.

The fact that it is a different cut than what is likely to be on a future Criterion release makes it a purchase worth considering. I'm kind of happy it is a different version / option. Thinking along the lines of the Blade Runner release with what was it - four different cuts in one package?

I believe that was the European Cut, not the Director's Cut.

Both run 142 minutes, but are slightly different.
