Some sites seem to think that Lion King 3D will do very well. While its certainly the most favored Disney animated classic among fans, I just don't see a re-release hitting number one. I'm still undecided whether I will see it or Drive tomorrow.

I'll go out on a limb and say Drive will win.

Drive was awesome and Straw Dog sucked (didn't pay to see either, so I didn't contribute). I thought Contagion was pretty good, but it probably didn't get much word of mouth, so I don't see it repeating. The Lion King's two week run is pretty much just a 3D exploit, so I don't think it'll make much at all. I'm definitely going to grab that Blu-ray though. So I hope it's Drive this weekend.

My cousin tried to get tickets for Lion King to bring her son...every showing for the weekend was already sold out a few days in advance (it's showing 7 times per day)

I just got back from a showing of the Lion King and it was great seeing it on the big screen. About half of my theater was full. I haven't seen many 3D movies, but I thought this was very well done. Look forward to owning the blu-ray in a couple weeks.

Wow, that poster of "I Don't Know How She Does It" looks terrible.

The sites I frequent are saying Lion King will be #1.

Maybe we'll be seeing more older films being re-released now.

I would like to see Drive take the top spot, but seeing how The Lion King is in for 2 weeks only, and 324,546 of my friends spam my FB News Feed talking about seeing it, I think that will win. Voted for Lion King, hoping for Drive.

Default The Lion King...#1 Movie in America...again

The Lion King has received three theatrical re-releases. The first was a short re-release in 1994 that served as an Oscar ad campaign (and to help goose box office numbers ahead of Forrest Gump).

The second was an IMAX "Special Edition" which included the Morning Report song by Elton John and Tim Rice.

While notable, neither re-release turned many heads. Disney abandoned the IMAX re-release model, and with the exception of 3-D re-releases of Nightmare Before Christmas and the Toy Story films, hasn't been particularly aggressive in re-releasing their animated films theatrically.

So now comes the 3-D version of The Lion King, released theatrically to help promote the coming Blu-Ray release, and I have to think few people saw this one coming...the thing is now the highest grossing attraction in U.S. cinemas. The Lion King. #1 at the box office. Again.

For studios who have been eyeing re-releases of classic titles in converted 3-D, this will surely add some fuel to that fire. The coming 3-D conversions Titanic and The Phantom Menace now have a new yardstick to be judged by.

FRIDAY 3PM: Very early numbers show Disney’s Lion King 3D roaring back to #1 with $15M weekend in 2,330 theaters; Warner Bros’ holdover Contagion #2 with $12M in 3,222 theaters, FilmDistrict’s Drive #3 with $11M from 2,886 theaters, Sony/Screen Gem’s Straw Dogs #4 with $8M from 2,408 theaters, and The Weinstein Co’s I Don’t Know How She Does It with $7.5M from 2,476 theaters.

From BoxOfficeGuru:

#LionKing3D dominates BO opening #1 w/ $8.8M FRI heading for amazing $30-33M wknd & $13k+ avg.

I checked the opening weekends for September, and Sweet Home Alabama holds the biggest September opening with $35M. September is a slower month than I thought.

So a 17-year-old movie beats a potential Oscar contender, a mediocre remake and a trashy chick flick. Bloody hell.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't TLK rereleased then also to fill in for the delayed Goofy Movie?
