They do travel by plane. It's the scene when Del keeps talking to Neal even though Neal is trying to read the article in the magazine. Then they show them trying to sleep and the old man coughs on Neal.

The scene that was cut was an extension of this scene where it shows all three of them eating their in-flight meal and the woman in front of Neal has her hair over her seat and on Neal's plate. This is the scene that is usually inserted back into the film when it's shown on TV.
