Same day as the rumored price drop and introduction of the White PS3. I read this earlier and thought it to be interesting.

it's still a rumor if they are dropping the 80GB PS3. this doesn't mean that it won't be dropped, but Best Buy hasn't dropped it yet.

Coincidence? I think not

Black cases are cooler looking, especially in a HT. The media card reader is also a nice feature.

Is Sony introducing a new $299 model or just reducing the cost of the current $399 model?

Supposedly both.

The white version should only be different than the current 40gb in color.

I think they are making room for a rumble sixaxis SKU. It is the only logical explanation.

Im surprised more people dont see it this way. I agree 100%. I think there might be a price cut to the existing 40gb ps3's associated with launching a new sku for the Dualshock bundle though

When is the Dual Shock supposed to be released for the PS3? I have been purposely waiting on buying a second controller to pick one of these up.

Not sure, last I heard was Feb/March. If you wnt a dualshock3 now, order it from playasia.com with the 5$ coupon code, choose the cheapest shipping... I got 2 for $130 after shipping. They will prolly be 59.99 here when they are launched anyways, possibly 49.99 but whats $10 right.

BTW I used the most expensive shipping for mine which is why they were $130.

Yeah, let's get ready to rumble!

I'd like to add that a Black PS3 is a far better look than white.

I just got my 80GB system about a month ago, and if they are indeed dropping that model, then I'm glad that I got mine when I did.

I got mine through Sony Style using that deal where if you sign up for their credit card, register with Sony Rewards, and use the card to buy the system, they give you a $100 rebate credit back onto the card. So, my 80GB PS3 is essentially costing me about the same amount of money as the everyday price for the 40GB (with a few extra bucks of additional tax added on).

I do think the whole Motorstorm promo pack was probably a temporary holiday thing. I figure eventually they will probably drop Spider-Man 3 from the 40GB model as well.

Regardless of what size the Hard Drive ends up being, I wonder if there will continue to be a model with PS2 backwards compatibility. It seems silly to remove it, and it seems silly to not have it in the current 40GB models (aside from making it an incentive to pay more cash for the 80GB, as they are probably making a bigger profit from those sales).

Since they got rid of the 'emotion engine' chip for PS2 playback that was originally in the 60GB and 20GB models and replaced it with software based emulation, I can't imagine that it's really costing them much to put the current PS2 compatibility in the 80GB models. I mean, it's a simple matter of copying their own software that they have already created and completely own (as far as I know) and putting it on the system. That can't be costing them much, if anything to continue to include it.

I wonder if maybe we will see a new "40GB" system SKU, now with a Dual Shock 3 controller and with PS2 compatibility, and either no pack in item, or a new pack in altogether. It would make sense since the vibration feedback of the new controller will likely work with old PS2 games that take advantage of the Dual Shock feature.

This is all speculation on my part, but I do think it will be a big mistake if Sony completely eliminates PS2 compatibility as an option from the PS3 system line.

That would be my guess too. It is the most simple and logical explanation IMO.

It's at least a few years down the road.
