FINALLY!!! 123 pages later and God knows how many reviews worldwide, there's a confirmation.

I don't recall saying there was an issue with the SQ ?

Anyway, he knew I was thinking of buying this and wasn't sure. He was being as honest as he could. He couldn't tell me to go and spend £50 and know that I was getting a tip top set of Blu's. He offered to lend me the box, saying the extras are good etc. I wasn't that fussed if they are not great.

I have seen a good few movies on BR with less budget and less money chucked at them to upgrade from DVD to Blu, from around that era.

Blade Runner, Alien, Nightmare on Elm St. A number of low budget 80's horror released via Arrow. They all blew me away and I could see such an improvement, almost like the improvement from VHS to DVD.

My mate said SW is not going to do that...
I agree with you films like Alien are just jaw dropping compared to the OT. The PQ could have been better with the amount of money Lucas has.
Aliens was the most talked about film inturm's of grain and DNR look at it now!

Well again, this was a set I wasn’t sure about. I have Alien set on both the R1 and R2. I was unsure about how, being older films, this could really improve on BR. As soon as a few on here (see thread) advised ‘reference quality’ transfer, I went for it... £13.97 helped as well.

I haven’t seen anyone say in their argument with me that SW was reference quality. In fact one person who fought on about how great it was said it shouldn’t be reference quality – it wouldn't be Star Wars.... Eh? £70 - I would like a set to be show off.

The problem (which has been much discussed) with the original trilogy is they were taken from flawed masters to begin with. Now don't get me wrong but the DVD's were reference quality if you can overlook the problems they had with blacks been crushed etc. They looked fantastic, miles ahead of anything we'd seen at home before. Now everyone hoped the problems would have been dealt with for the HD release and while some things were sorted out a lot were left on the 'to do' list.

And while we can debate that they should have gone back to the well and started again or if that's possible or not 'til the cows come home. We'll always be left with the feeling that the BD's (in their current incarnation at least) aren't all they should have been but they're pretty close.

Phew, I was starting to think a few 'experts' on here were accusing me of making things up or mates of mine were prats for not thinking this set was a gift from the God of Blu Ray !

Glad a few are being reasonable AND realistic.

By the sounds of it, your just looking for an excuse NOT to buy it. The only reason most didn't buy it was due to Lucas' changes to the films not because of poor transfers.

If your happy with your dvd's then stick to your dvd's as i guess the reviewers on this site talk shit.

Good for you, I’m glad for you.
Please don't put words in to my mouth. I don't even own the box set. I did have it though, and was more than happy with the AV quality (bar TPM's DNR problems), but unfortunately I think I've outgrown the films themselves, and traded the set in.

Do you actually understand how film works? Why wouldn't a 40 year old film hold up on BD? Film is still, from a technical perspective, far superior to anything consumer level video can offer.

If you seen ALIEN in HD then you will understand that age of a film does not matter

yes and no... its more about film type 35mm, 70mm, panavision.

according to imdb star wars (epIV) was filmed in

35 mm (also horizontal) (Eastman 100T 5247)

and so for example.. therefore the sound of music made in the 60's with its 70mm film which is high defination should look better even tho its older. Its not exact science and its confusing.

I think you misread my post. I was saying that age doesn't matter. It's the other guy that seems to have diminished expectations of older films on Blu-ray.

You kept going on about how amazing this is. How I shouldn't dislike it in any form and be ever so grateful for the great offering.

So far - according to your great self - I have made things up, only been interested in packaging and now I dismiss old films on Blu Ray.

I have only said how disappointed I am in the long awaited release of such massive blockbusters, with the amount of money and tech on hand, in comparison to other less fortunate films.

Stop talking gibberish. I never said anything about being grateful, or how you can't dislike it. I questioned you're method of judgment, and your true motives (the packaging). Anyone can see that by scanning back a couple of pages.
