Great stuff. Is this how it looks on TOS blu-rays? Seems a little wider....? 1.37? 1.40? 1.45?? What is it exactly?

The Blu-ray was cropped down from Academy 1.37:1 to TV 1.33:1.

For the other series, would you guys rather have upscaled SD effects, or no Blu release at all?

It's 3656x2664 pixels, which works out to 1.37:1, the vintage standard for 35mm sound movies.
That's about 9.739MP.

A Sony 4K theatrical digital projector projects 1.85 at 3996x2160, which is 8.631MP.
While there's no official 1.37 mode in those projectors, it would probably project at 2959x2160, which is 6.392MP.

Considering that recent and upcoming 35mm SLRs are coming in at anywhere from 16MP to 36MP (although the frame sizes are different), one could make the argument that even 4K (about 8.6MP) is nowhere near enough.

Absolutely Paramount will release the other series, at least Enterprise, on BluRay. Paramount owns these properties to make money from them.

I bought ENT season-by-season as it came out on DVD. It's a great SF TV series and would likely look the best of all the Trek shows on BD. I would assume that all 4 seasons were shot on HD and in widescreen aspect ratio, but haven't looked it up to verify. First, let's get TNG in our hot little hands and go from there!

First couple seasons were shot on film and edited in HD, last couple were shot and edited in HD. Or maybe it was the first three seasons were shot on film and edited in HD, and the last season was shot and edited in HD. Either way, the masters are already in HD, and would be easy to release on BluRay.

Paramount likely will not want to give Trek fans something else besides TNG to spend their money on, so they won't release Enterprise on BluRay until they've gotten everyone's TNG dollars first.

Which is sad since that might take seven years.

Thanks maxwell. I wondered about the resolution of the scanning. A bit noisy, but that confirms what I've been wondering.

I sure hope it doesn't take 7 yrs to complete. You're probably right though. It would be bad business to release 2 different trek series simultaneously. It would be like betting red and black on the roulette table

@livelong420, I'd have to say, if it can't be done right the first time, it probably shouldn't be done. I want to see the Trek series(ALL of them) in their full 1080P glory! Upscaled SD effects probably aren't too bad, but I'd rather see them look wonderful, than just o-k.

I think if they make enough profit from next gen they'll try to do one of the others, probably starting with DS9 since that came next....My guess is at a $130 msrp they will make enough profit to at least start on DS9.
