Universal Studios digitally restores 13 classic movies, including 'The Sting,' 'Jaws,' 'Dracula' and 'Frankenstein,' as part of its 100th birthday celebration.


"The studio is really putting an emphasis on the fact that we have a legacy," said Peter Schade, Universal's vice president of content management and technical services, whose team is responsible for the maintenance of the studio's physical and digital assets and is doing the digital restoration. Founded by Carl Laemmle 100 years ago, Universal Studios is the second-oldest movie studio in the world and the oldest continuously operating film producer and distributor in the U.S.

The original negatives for Universal films are stored at either the Library of Congress or UCLA Film & Television Archive's vaults in Valencia. "Every attempt was made to digitally restore these films from the original negatives. But for any given title there may be elements that are incomplete and aged to the point they may not be the best to use," Schade said.
That's the case with Tod Browning's 1931 film "Dracula" with Bela Lugosi. Schade and his crew are not using the original nitrate negative but a first-generation print that was made off it. "We don't have a complete original negative," Schade said.

Other titles include 1930's "All Quiet on the Western Front,"the Spanish-language version of "Dracula," 1931's "Frankenstein," 1935's"Bride of Frankenstein," 1941's "Buck Privates," 1959's "Pillow Talk," 1962's"To Kill a Mockingbird," 1963's "The Birds," 1985's "Out of Africa" and 1993's "Schindler's List."
"The 13 films were chosen by a team of a film historians, executives and archivists," Schade said. "They tried to pick titles that span every decade."

All the restored films are being released on Blu-ray and DVD, and several of them will also be screening at UCLA Film & Television Archive's celebration of Universal that begins Friday at the Billy Wilder Theater with 1995's "Apollo 13" and ends with "Jaws" on June 24.

This was rumored a bit back but brushed off as speculation, but this is certainly the sort of stuff I wanna hear. If I recall, the set would likely be the same titles put out in a box about 10 years ago on DVD: Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Wolfman, Mummy, Invisible Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera (Claude Rains version). There was also mention of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein coming out separately, so here's hoping.

I hope the price is under 50 bucks, but that's wishful thinking.

I am so all over this when it comes out. I won't retire my dvd's just yet. I can't get rid of my Anniversary edition of Dracula anyway. I went to a collector show and had Carla Laemmle sign it for me.

Actually Creature From The Black Lagoon and Revenge Of The Creature were both shot in 3D. Both would be cool but the first one for sure.

Bet the artwork will be beautiful with Universal's 100th Anniversary blue logo on the cases like on 'To Kill A Mockingbird' and 'All Quiet on the Western Front'.

Great news! Seems like Universal has a lot on their plate already for 2012, I wonder how these catalog releases will be treated? With the utmost care they deserve or so-so like some of the 2011 Universal catalogs.
A good friend of mine said he'll finally make the leap to blu-ray when the Universal horror classics were available...I could'nt wait to email him the link.
Anyone have an inkling as to what the set will consist of?

I had the pleasure of seeing a 3-D screening of this a few weeks back. It was quite an experience. But I'd heard that there's a lot of issues with properly bringing it to the home theater format due to expense. Something with it being polarized and the impossibility to reproduce it properly...or something along those lines. But 'd certainly be for it if they can make it happen. Even a "fake" 3-D conversion like Friday the 13th part 3 would at least be fun for the novelty of it.

Yea I would take an official Anaglyph version on Blu without hesitation.

That would be half of a double dip but I wouldn't complain at all. Now if only we can get the Hammer Horror films and House of Wax on Blu-ray and I'd be so, so, so happy.

I don't know what to say. I didn't think there was anything that could top Star Wars on Blu-ray. I happily stand corrected.

I will buy them all either way so a box set will be just fine. Man, classic Universal monsters in HiDef....bring it on!
