The same thing happened to my Australian remastered version of the Fifth Element released by Sony, which has now been discontinued here and a new version was rereleased by a different distributor last year. It's the only blu I own that has just stopped working altogether for no reason, though I've had other blu titles not work in both my ps3's after doing certain firmware updates, that all still work in my Oppo and Panasonic players perfectly.

When I discovered that the Fifth Element blu had stopped working I did a search on the Internet which took me about an hour to find info on 2 other Australian's that it had also happened too. I just put it down to a faulty batch.

Have you guys tried using different Blu-ray players? I have the Spiderman films and I haven't experienced this problem at all.

Yes, of course. I've tried it on about 4, including a PS3. The disc is dead, believe me. But I suspect, as I'm in the UK, my copy would have come from a very different batch.

What's salient is that, on some occasions, there is (or was) a fault in the pressing that leads to a "time bomb"effect. Back in the days of "dvd rot", a lot of people reckoned it was down to the glue used to dual-layer the discs.

So did you contact Sony when your copy went bad or ????

Just curious how studios handle this kind of thing.

i'll gather you didn't notice i said i tried mine in 3 different blu-ray players and got the same results. i guess that these disc can at times go bad despite the long life they are supposed to have.

i have not bothered to contact 20th century fox (i'm sure they would laugh their assess off if i asked for a replacement disc) about the AvP since it's been more than 2 years since i had the disc. i just haven't watched it in so long and found it incredibly odd that it wouldn't work (not even acknowledged) in 3 different players. like i said, i've watched it many times in the past with no problems either.

I have had the opposite happen, like I tried three copies of Bambi when I 1st got it, it never worked, then out of the blue one day after a few months of having the disc it decided to work. Same with the english version of the Leopard, didn't want to watch it but wanted to see the pq, it wouldn't play, and then 6 months later started up in my player just fine, and ever since its been fine, and I had all the newest firmware and everything

I just tried my copy of AVP on my ancient LG BH200 (which is a blu-ray/HD DVD combo player). It booted up pretty quickly and plays fine. I agree-pretty good movie. Sorry to hear your copy no longer works.

No I didn't bother as it is discontinued and thought that there was most likely nothing they could or would have done about it.

It never hurts to contact the studio. As an example, I had a couple of Universal DVDs that acquired DVD rot a number fo years ago. Both of the titles were purchased in 1997 and were approx. 10 years old at the time. However, both were currently OOP and not released on BD.

I contacted the studio to see if it was possible to purchase a replacement disc and to my surprise Universal offered to exchange the defective discs for working ones. All I needed to do was send a copy of my original receipt (which I've kept) along with the defective DVDs back to Universal. To my surprise the copies I received were exact replacement discs which were pressed in 1997. My only out of pocket expense was return shipping via USPS.

Thus it never hurts to contact the studio; I know Disney also keeps extra copies of their releases for replacements even if the title is OOP or has gone back in the vault. I wouldn't be surprised Sony does the same thing.

I've had two (2) discs go bad on me. The earlier version of Stargate (not the 15th Anniversary edition) and Total Recall. Both were early Lionsgate discs and both played fine at time of purchase but died in a couple of years since purchase. Tried contacting Lionsgate about the Total Recall disc and got nowhere with a replacement. Figured it wasn't worth the hassle for the Stargate disc. As stated above (or on another forum), the early Lionsgate discs appear to be very susceptible to failure (pressings in 2007 and before ). I've seen multiple complaints about Lionsgate's American Psycho and Basic Instinct disc failures (although I do not own either of those so no personal experience to report).
