This film is definitely not meant for you because
a) the original novel is -pulp- fiction. It was meant to be basic entertainment for the masses. I think this movie will have the exact same goal, and that shouldn't be a problem.
b) the movie seems to follow directly in the shoes of Star Wars, Prince of Persia and Avatar (wonder if the blue paint on JC is meant as a tribute to Avatar), which you seem to have a problem with (to speak politely)

Just my 2cps
I have no problem with escapism. Raiders of the Lost Ark is great escapism. The original Star Wars movies are great escapism movies. Inception is, too. Avatar felt like an insult to my intelligence. Predictable ideas, a poorly written script and characters, nothing that came close to the technical marvel that the hype was making it out to be, and you have to wonder what all that's good for, if you don't have a proper script. None of which have anything to do with John Carter of Mars. I don't mind entertainment at all, and Pixar's movies (well, with one or two exceptions) are high on that list, so I have faith in Stanton. It won't be the first time trailers have given the wrong impression about a movie.

Checking around other message boards, I am hearing rumors of $300 million with it approaching $400 million partially due to overshoots!

I like the look of the trailer, pretty much what I was expecting. It as a feel of Prince Of Perisa to me and I did enjoy that one.

I am wondering if they will explain how John Carter get's to mars or if they will just make him "native" there from the start of the movie?

It appears that they are following that part pretty close to the original book judging from the 1st teaser trailer-

If the budget is that high, I don't see it making much money.

A quick look at the YouTube comments for the trailer proves this. It's the usual bashing. "It's Disney? Lame!", the usual... What a shame. I wonder how many of these people actually watched a single Disney animated classic.

First themes from Giacchino's John Carter score

Listened to the elements of the John Carter score and wow, evoked the sensation of 1970s sci-fi romanticism and there were elements of which also gave me the feeling I was experiencing Raiders of the Lost Ark with the love theme and also a flirtation with the style of Horner. I want the score more than the film!

Japanese trailer, shows a little background on John Carter and how he actually ended up on Mars.

If you have a Kindle you can get a collection of the first 5 books in the series for $1. I've finished the first book....will keep reading on. Wasn't sure at first....but it moved quickly and kept me interested.

I read the first trilogy of books for the heck of it. It's good pulpy fun, but pretty forgettable.

This looks terrible.

1. Strong protagonist in he-man like clothing.

2. CGI aliens

3. Sexy female

4. CGI battles

5. Forgettable characters and plot

Yep, looks like cookie cutter B movie that Hollywood has been oh so happy to spoon feed to the masses. I hope this fails and teaches Disney a lesson.

I bet whoever greenlit this movie is going to be shitcanned, if he/she hasn't been already.

I cannot agree more. I cringe everytime I see a trailer for this movie. It is going to flop miserably.

Don't you see that's part of the problem? Its the same thing we have seen over and over again, I would not pick Clash to compare things to since it barely scraped by and it had a smaller budget than this inflated CGI mess.

Well, I've seen the trailers and TV spots, and haven't read the books. I also thought the first trailer was rather but the second hooked me.

I'm definitely interested in seeing this one and will probably go opening day.
