Watched it again last night. Liked it a bit more, still not quite on board with all the hype though. Like Inception and Hanna, I felt like it was a case of the craft of a skillful filmmaker lifting up thin or banal material, and resulting in a good but somewhat hollow film. 8/10.
Not the biggest fan of Gosling's performance either. I guess he's supposed to project this detached existential cool, but for me it came off more crippling shyness or Asperger's syndrome

Drive has created a dedicated fanboy following who jumps on you if you speak ill of it.
I don't care if people don't like it, I can certainly see how it's a divisive movie that I am hesitant to outright recommend to anyone. I have honestly not said "Yes, watch it!" to one person who has asked. I've said "You'll love it or you'll hate it".

Still, there's a difference between simply not liking a movie, and not liking a movie strongly enough to feel the need to hang out in this thread and start arguments with everyone who did. They can make their point and move on. The "fanboys" don't seem to be inciting arguments, while the trolls are.

Really? I'd guess the latter. In my experience most people who bring the "Ryan Gosling sucks as/is nothing special as an actor" argument to the table have seen...The Notebook...and...The Notebook. And maybe Remember The Titans.

Talking about his character in Drive? What you said, plus also Asperger's Syndrome doesn't even...really...make sense in this context. I mean, he's not obsessed with like different types of acorns or something. Clearly sociopathic tendencies.

Edit: Well, he is somewhat, uh, fixated on driving. So the Aspergers assessment is relevant I guess. Disregard

This coming from one of fanboys who gets defensive on the Tree of Life thread if you question its pure genius, ability to capture all that is life in celluloid, and its superiority above all films ever made.

The Believer is a Gosling film that gets no recognition or discussion.

The Believer is excellent. I wish I could be cool and truthfully claim I saw it years ago, but I just finally saw it a month or two back (though it'd been on my radar quite awhile)

That was one ugly jacket.

You are quite correct. Ditto that for The Slaughter Rule, which has another fantastic performance from Gosling. I imagine some of it has to do with both films featuring some uncomfortable subject matter, but I wish more people would seek them out.

The United States Of Leland is another personal favorite.

Well, just to throw in my two cents.... I really liked 'Drive.' My date & I saw it on the spur of the moment (the movie that we wanted to see-- I don't recall what it was- had already started). We both liked it, but I enjoyed it more because her head was on my shoulder the whole time.

Just saw it last night. Thought the movie itself was okay, but Gosling's performance was simply amazing! He carried that movie, no doubt. I wouldn't mind revisiting if it comes to Blu-ray.
