No ISF calibrator agrees with you. It all depends on the set.

What test pattern are you using to do this?

Good discussion here : http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...ight=sharpness

That's not what they thought us in THX training. In fact they mention a setting of zero depends usually on the manufactor.

Again, direct comparisons are the most telling rather than what a company says about their product. Some of the time the people writing that stuff have not even used the product first hand.

Regardless, there's usually an "accurate" sharpness setting, whatever its numeric value is. Anything else is applying artificial sharpening (or softening) to the image. Some TVs always apply some sharpening. That might be desirable depending on how far you sit from the TV, but when you're not displaying an accurate image you probably shouldn't blame the disc for issues resulting from the processing.

You misunderstood my post. During calibration there can be a starting point. We are also taught to only input written settings if they are by isf. We don't go by manufactor settings, we commonly input similar settings to isf. The best recommended settings are by isf certified tech.

I think you need to take this up with THX certified isf certified staff at THX then. Try Mike, and ask if he can't recommended some settings to start with before he arrives with his gear.

Yeah, I researched my displays thoroughly through several sites including CNET and the manufacturer itself and they all recommended a Sharpness of 0 for my displays. Then I went and actually did some comparisons with the sharpness using my test pattern and different BDs to come to the conclusion that 0 works the best.

I set my sharpness to 15 on my Panny Plasma. Not sure why to be honest because from 0 to 15 I notice no change what-so-ever in the picture. I suppose I might as well just set it to 0.

The only time I've ever noticed a drastic change for the worse when putting the sharpness up was on my 42" Sharp Aquos that I got back in 2005...2006? Had horrible banding issues, bleh! Anyway, the sharpness on that set goes from 0 to 10 and once you get to 9 it all of the sudden puts a VERY noticeable white outline around objects and people and if you set it to 10 it gets brighter, uglier.

Kinda wish they would just do away with the sharpness setting. Seems pointless to me

Why would they do this? Isn't there already a Blu-ray collection? And why wouldn't they just make it a trilogy pack?

Oh Fox...

Seems like an odd thing to release on its own, but I suppose it's for people who didn't like Predators (although Predator 2 is not much better than Predators in many respects) and hence don't want the whole trilogy.

Here in Australia and also in the UK they already released a Predator 1/2 two-pack back in 2008 (see here). In fact I picked up a boxed Predator Quadrilogy set containing the Predator 1/2 two-pack along with the AvP 1/2 two-pack BDs a couple of years ago.

The copy of Predator in the original two-pack was the 2008 version, but I think it's safe to assume the new US release two-pack will have Predator Ultimate Bastardized Edition instead.

The sharpness setting on all my TVs always makes very drastic changes to video games. Movies, not as much, but still noticeable.

What is the sharpness range for your display? It's -50 to +50 right?

Mine is 0-100, so 0 is terribly soft, DVE calibration puts it at 50.

That's correct, my primary display is -50/+50. Anything less than 0 softens it up and anything more than 0 makes it look artificial.

I thought so. DVE is a nice tool if you can't afford professional calibration.

That's more like it. Although, I'm still working on a cheap copy of Predator 2. Then I'll be able to say that myself.

Interestingly enough, a "25th Anniversary Edition" has popped up on Vudu today. Maybe a new Blu in the works?
