less than 10 minutes from Akihabara
Default Japanese electronics chain offering to replace HD DUD players for Blu-ray players

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/do...0221/edion.htm

I found this somewhat funny. Basically it says that a corporation that owns multiple chain stores (including the Ishimaru Denki chain famous in Akihabara) will be exchanging DUD players/recorders purchased before the Toshiba announcement for Blu-ray players/recorders (not including the PS3 apparently). If the price for the BD player is lower they refund the difference, if the price is higher, you have to pay the difference.

It might be nice for some customers if US stores would do this as well, but it's a lot less costly to do something like this in Japan since only like 10 people bought into DUD

Well, there are no much of HDDVD recorders in japan. So, to retail chains, it is affordable.

Aside from promoting software sales, I'd bet dimes to donuts that the chips in these HD DVD players will end up on the aftermarket as "pulls". Anyone who's ever worked in the semiconductor industry knows what I'm talking about. There's a lotta profit there.
