Philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge suggested that if a writer could infuse a "human interest and a semblance of truth" into a fantastic tale, the reader would suspend judgment concerning the implausibility of the narrative. Many have argued, that it is a "plothole", that they take of their helmets on the planet. Sci-fi like Prometheus, rests on conditions about the state of knowledge and science in the future. 1) Space travel 2) Computer technology 3) Robotics 4) Methods of resolving age It is not a plot hole, taking a helmet of. It is suspension of disbelief on the viewers side, to accept that the movie states visually, that a computer gives an OK sign to take of the helmet, thus having screened the atmosphere beforehand. Holloway on his way to take of his helmet BEFORE the computer has given this, states something about Holloway as a human. Factuality errors will occur though, just try to read about 2001 A Space Odyssey om moviemistakes.com, even though Kubrick was very keen on making everything as correct as possible, with the help of NASA. That didn't stop the movie from becoming the mother of all sci-fi though. Prometheus has a lot of statements pertaining to science and knowledge in the future and if the viewer insists on compromising this, due to state of the art and knowledge in 2012, then it is the viewers disabilty to provide suspension of disbelief that provides a lot of the "plotholes" and "implausability". I had a few grudges regarding the narrative and some actors, but I had absolutely no problem about the use of sci-fi in the movie. |

Thank God/engineer that you had no problem with the use of sci-fi in the movie.... That's because the whole film IS sci-fi! ![]() ![]() |

4.0 is too generous a score for the movie. It's a 3.0 at best.
I don't think the film has many plot holes, it's just a weak story very badly told with some awfully contrived scenes. I was also very aware of the video noise in the dark scenes when I saw it at the theater - you couldn't help but notice it! Scott should certainly have stuck with 35mm for this one. |

I enjoyed it quite a bit and while everyone is entitled to their opinion I'm a firm believer that some of the people that didnt enjoy the film WERE indeed expecting some sort of direct prequel to Alien and when they got something completely different, they had a tough time making sense of what they were watching...and some of the bad writing (and there is some) didn't help either. I still enjoyed it though. For all its shortcomings it makes up for quite a few of them with some fantastic imagery and thought provoking ideas. |

At first, this REALLY pissed me off. I couldn't help but say to myself "WHY go this route?!?...it makes no sense!" but the more I read about it, the more interesting the idea became. In other words, my mind changed completely and now I was thinking that this really is the better way to go. Why do something as rinse and repeat as having xenomorphs running around again, eggs and facehuggers all over again, why tell what very well could have been the same story all over again only this time with a "origin story" of sorts. I kinda like how they went almost completely off the beaten path and made something different. Something tells me if this film had gone how it was originally intended, we'd have a MUCH weaker film on our hands. Ridley made the right choice, despite what the haters say. |

So, the company had received the LV-426 derelict message before the Nostromo was redirected; another strong tie-in to Alien:
"The Peter Weyland Files (1080p, 18:57): A collection of internet promo videos, presented within a dossier of sorts, with notes from Weyland, the most revealing of which suggests that Weyland's scientists detected a signal coming from LV-426—the moon from the first Alien film—and that Weyland considered it a secondary objective."
