I assume they will be presented in XAVC format which is H.264/AVC compression (but a level and profile much higher than Bluray spec HP L4.1). HEVC is not ready for primetime. I am guessing it will be a 1TB drive with about 80-100Mbps per movie. It will be interesting to see what kind of encryption/protection scheme is utilised and whether any of these 4k movies will make it into 'the wild' so to speak. |

![]() Anyway, as far as “off-topic” in general, my belief is that if you wish to find a valuable natural/wild pearl, one should have to search through some oysters in the process. ![]() For example, some have got to get past the first paragraph of this post…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ng#post6810781 in order to get to the low-down. Anyway, good to see you around. ![]() |

No disrespect to anybody using them but we will look back at the early age of digital cinema cameras as rather unfortunate. We jumped too soon and I think that's going to be the general consensus in coming years as display technology improves. |

Try doing THAT during the afternoon/evening with your fancy RED laser projector. ![]() Plus, there’s a black Lab as a mascot on the right. ![]() As an aside, something I find rather amusing in the above link is that the blog-ee (Ray) says “Last week I sort of shot off my mouth”….. For those naïve folks out there, let me tell you something… it is FAR closer to reality that Ray asks his boss for permission as to when he can go on a bathroom break – than that of him uttering a spontaneous revelation on an “official” blog. Just sayin. Speak to us honestly, please, even if you are a company-man. Last edited by Penton-Man; 12-01-2012 at 06:35 PM. Reason: added the phrase...permission as to |

![]() b.t.w., for those aspiring screenwriters out there, Quentin mentions Anna Karenina during his comments. Save this if you have some interest because these things sometimes don’t stay online very long… http://www.focusawards2012.com/scripts/AnnaKarenina.pdf |

This is what you need next: http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/30/r...450-pre-order/
Then you can watch the hobbit in 4K resolution at 60 fps. I hope. Also:http://www.red.com/products/redray I am guessing they won't have physical media for sometime if at all ???? Last edited by dib2; 12-01-2012 at 11:52 AM. |

What Quentin says is pretty silly for such a clever guy. Digital makes possible new ways of expressing and telling the stories, but then again considering all QT does is regurgitate old cinema, albeit very well,I can see why he would have that stance. Personally I think he's restricting himself unnecessarily. |

Quentin is just making the point that the feel of film is in the grain and the color palette. Film also has a logarithmic exposure, where prolonged exposure falls off the curve, where as digital is purely linear exposure. The highlights and shadows will never be comparable between shooting digital and film. Sure, with digital you get a nice clean smooth deep consistent rich picture, a platform devoid of all the signature elements of cinema. A glorified public TV.

Are the studios really going to force Tarantino to move to digital? I find that a bit hard to believe. His films make money, you would think he'd be allowed to keep doing what he wants to. I wouldn't say I'm a huge Tarantino fan, but I've enjoyed every one of his movies. And his comments on digital projection are just silly. I'm sure with a brand new print, and a real projectionist, films look great in a theater. But often I remember seeing scratches, significant jutter, and bad focus before digital projection. ![]() What I mean is that, face it, your next Steven Spielberg, Marty Scorsese etc. is an indie filmmaker who, in the past, has had to overcome tremendous hurdles in order to get into *the studio system* and have his work distributed. This Odemax thing should change that, for the better. ![]() One thing which I’ve never been happy with is the self-limiting nature of the current motion picture business which is all about the majors not taking any risks and doing everything they can to insulate themselves against risk….co-financing, etc. This leads to a plethora of remakes, reboots, prequels, sequels…many of which are just crap but they are safe bets. Not to mention, the practice of mediocre 3D or 3D as an after-thought because some are worried about pushing the envelope rather than taking full advantage of the extra-dimensional technology which is available to them with good stereographers as true collaborators. As far as the RED product goes, it’s apparent that the lynch-pin to the whole process of making it work is their codec and if that is as good as the advertisement claims, well then, I’m duly impressed. ![]() In the Tech Specs though, one thing I notice that is kind of weird ![]() Also, I don’t see any news about the RED laser projector, and I don’t have time now to read any discussion on their forum about the REDRAY announcement but, I think there are a lot of projection people in the consumer electronics business out there who are breathing a big sigh of relief ![]() |

What I meant was that if one is aware of the post production process, at this time in the technological cycle, it is not very practical to render and color correct in 3D 4K 48fps for a 4K finish. Could they have, given the resources of P.J.'s post production Company? Heck, anything’s possible, but I think doubtful. This is an inordinate amount of data to play around with and the post production process in regards to handling 3D 4K 48fps is in its infancy, so don’t be surprised if there are no 3D 4K masters forthcoming at this time…not to mention, don’t be surprised if c.c. subtitles are unavailable with the HFR versions. *I changed 60 to 48fps in your quote.
