Gotta give credit where it's due: Bose's marketing is second to none. It amazes me constantly how many suckers they rake in and how many people you can run into randomly on the streets who truly believe Bose is "the best."

If I ever start my own world dictatorship, I'm getting their head marketing guys on my propoganda team stat!

^^ This phrase must have originated in a Bose topic of some kind a while back. Certainly you'd be hard pressed to find a better application for the phrase.

I wouldn't say Bose is the best by any means...

but their systems deliver quality sound for people who don't have the room.....I have it in my room on my entertainment center and it more than does the job..

That is the truth! I think MS picked up more than a few of these people.

The problem is Bose "colors" the sound.

It makes everything so warm and wonderful but it does not reflect the original soundtrack. The same way artificially boosting the color or brightness affects the appeal of certain TV screens in showrooms. It's not a true representation of the original material.

I have to admit, despite my poo-pooing of Bose systems for years, a friend of mine recently bought one and asked me to set it up for him. Once set up properly, it gave a very good sound indeed for a small room. Not what I'd go for myself, but much better than I expected.

exactly...I mean, if I was purchasing my own system...I'd do what I did previously and purchase it piece by piece...receiver...subwoofer...a speaker package etc..

the Bose Wave radio was a hand-me-down after someone else upgraded.....and I am more than happy with the results...

I have owned my Bose AM16's for 5 years and they haven't skipped a beat.. are they the best no.. are they the worse no.. for the money spent at the time $1100.. there was nothing that even came close to them (6.1).. period!

Default The Budweiser of speakers

Back in the late 70's I bought my first pair of Bose speakers, the 601's. I paid $600 for the pair. I thought they were good. Then a few years later I bought a $150 pair of Boston A-40's to bring to Japan where I was moving to. I compared the two side by side at home and while the Bose speakers were louder and had more bass (being about 8 times the size of the smaller Boston's) , the A-40's were the much better sounding ones. I never listened the 601's again as I unloaded them on a friend.

I'm still in Japan and it amazes me here how people think Bose is the best. My student showed me his new set of Bose speakers, a 3 piece system touted as a 5.1 system, going for about $800. I listened for a bit and was not impressed but had to act like it so as not to hurt his feelings. Yes, the advertisemnt blitz works overseas also and the systems are even more overpriced than in the states. If this guy could hear the $699 Definitve Tech. home theatre system my mom got last year he would die.

If you are considering Bose speakers be sure to read the above mentioned article at http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html before purchasing. Bose, like Budwieser owes their success mostly to advertising and hype and the poor souls unable to make informed decisions.

^ from that report:

"Frequency Response 280 Hz to 13.3k Hz at ±10.5 dB"

+/- 10.5 dB - that is laughable! (not to mention the freq range...)

If you don't understand the decibel (dB) rating - a change in dB of 10 is a change of 10x.

Now since they are measuring +/- 10 dB, you have a 20 dB swing which means some frequencies will be different by 100x - not exactly a flat freq response!

Wow that is just too funny....

Do yourself a huge favour and save yourself some money and stay away from these!
