It's a good suggestion Fornando but the thing is Energy is sold at FS and Fluance at Best buy so it's hard to get a good side by side comaparaison but I am confident the Fluance sounds just as good. Either way for the price they are both great deals.

He was refering to the Energy set at $299 at FS as being Energy/Jamo as they are rebranded Jamo speakers.

Yep

But if pulling the plug today I would recommend you going with your gut (Energy since you did your homework). I mean in all honesty all speakers sound different but you have a real world budget to meet, have no inclination to go apes over it anytime soon and just want to have a decent 5.1. You are looking at real speakers (not nano sized) and you would probably be happy with any of those choices as it's not like you are upgrading from expensive speakers. If you were looking for a fairly big upgrade from speakers you'd own, time not being a factor, the I def would shop around, listen like crazy etc.

Not everyone is as involved in this hobby as most here, and that's fine, you have other priorities. Now go to FS (or online) and click away, I'm sure your new setup will sound fine (as you don't really have a reference on which you want to improve) and will still be one of the few who has a nice 5.1 system. Heck you still have 30 days, you can always see what's available later if not totally satisfied.

I couldn't find the speakers at Costco, but if they are the same....Though on speakers the extended Costco warranty is less important than let's say a receiver or TV. Unless their are other advantages that I don't know about not being a member there (return policy, etc).

Edit: and later on when a great deal on a little sub shows up, you complete.

Alright, that's good to hear. I'm a pretty savvy buyer for most things, but I'm just in over my head here so I don't want to make any assumptions. Thanks again.

Yup, you're right, and also I did actually go to both Future Shop and BestBuy (in Toronto, Dundas Square) and they didn't have any of the sets I was looking for out to try (in fact, I didn't even see any boxes for them floating around).

I am a musician, so I know the "Get what sounds good" mantra for guitar amplifiers, and I would normally wait and follow it, but the sale ends now and I've not the time.

Going to go have some lunch and mull over my decision a bit more, and then I'll come back and render the verdict for you guys.

Any last minute advice would be great if anyone thinks they have more to share!

Thanks again everyone.

P.S. Thought I'd mention it's not just because I'm cheap that I'm being so careful and anal retentive about something so monetarily low, it's also because my girlfriend and I do a lot of charity work and I'm dealing with some buyers guilt when I could be putting the money into our groups, haha.

But I just keep telling myself that you've got to treat yourself from time to time!

So thanks for putting up with me.

Hey guys,

Just a quick message to let you know I ended up going with the Energy/Jamo set.

Managed to price-match a shop to get them for $197, so it was really a no brainer.

They're already here even, quick shipping.

Unfortunately, a bit TOO quick as this weekend is when I was heading out to get new speaker wire and banana plugs.

So now my sweet speakers and sweet receiver have to just sit in their sweet boxes in the middle of my living room until I get all the parts I need to put them together.

The anticipation is killing me!

Thanks so much to everyone for helping me, I really appreciate it. I'll continue researching things like this so if I decide to upgrade I won't be so helpless!

I was about to put a special thanks, but then I realized everyone was pretty damned helpful, so special thanks to everyone!

I'll let you guys know how it turned out once I've got everything all up and running!

Brandon, have you had a chance to get everything set up and give it an initial listen?

I wish. I'm still waiting on my banana plugs to come in from Monoprice at the moment. I went out and grabbed some new high quality (I think*) speaker wire yesterday though, so I'm fighting the urge to just hook it up.

*Is there really a practical difference between speaker wire aside from gauge?

Thanks very much.

Better still, I just looked at the receipt and saw they messed up the price match to my benefit.

I ordered online but price-matched in store and it looks like they refunded the entire payment and then only charged me the price-matched difference, not the actual price. So I ended up only paying $130 after tax, when really that's the amount I should've been refunded, ha.

Ahh, understandable. As fas as wire gauge, 16AWG should be fine, if you go over 50ft. then 14AWG is recommended. I use 16AWG which is fine in my set-up without a problem. Man you got an even better deal on those. Sweet.

Thanks for the tip. The difference in price between the 14AWG and 16AWG was minimal, so I went for the 14AWG as a better-safe-than-sorry precaution.

You just see all these "high quality, 99.9% oxygen free, wound from Rapunzel's glorious golden hair" variations that it's a bit nerve-wracking when you don't know what you're doing.

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP!

Here's an update with a few pics of the new system all set up (at the bottom of this post, and in the first post). It sounds GREAT! Thanks again for all the help! I will need a new subwoofer soon though, so we'll consider this '...to be continued.'

And if you've got a knack for displays, please check out my thread over here and help me with a TV, I'd appreciate it!

Also, here's some pics.
