I would try it out on another player before asking for an exchange. Do you have the latest firmware on your blu-ray player? You can probably just take the disc to a local store that sells blu-ray players and ask them to pop it in and go the the scene. Maybe a friend who has a blu-ray player?

This is $69.99 at BBY. Thinking of grabbing it but won't be able to till next week. Just wondering if it's the general opinion that it won't be on sale next week or not?

I think it being on sale next week is quite low. Unfortunately, that is really a quite high price as it's been consistantly cheaper than that. It was down to $40 during Christmas time and it usually runs in the mid $50's. If you have to have it in the immediate future, than go for it. If you can wait and want to save some money, it will be cheaper in the future, I'm pretty sure (the question is when).

By the way just look at the link: It's $62 from Amazon.com with free shipping.

Check out the price tracker for this newer version: It's currently at $70 but as you can see the price just recently went up if you scroll over the price tracker.

Thanx for the info. I was doing some checking & decided I'll wait for a better price. I'm thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of $49.99. I really want it now but it is a bit pricey for a set that's been around for awhile.

That sounds much more reasonable.

I was going to buy the Extended Blu-ray edition before Christmaswhen it was listed for around $50 but I couldn't get myself to do it as the theatrical cut was selling for $12 with a $5 coupon towards the hobbit (which I was going to see anyway). $7 was a good deal for the theatrical set, and since I have the extended edition on DVD I couldn't get myself to do it. My long term plan is to get the Extended Edition blu-ray and just sell my DVD set.

I Have been selling off alot of superfluous BR's I acquired when I first got into the format. I reinvested that money in other BR's of course. My collection was much larger but I am now more interested in quality sets. I have added Die Hard: 25th Anniversary Collection, Alien Anthology, & Indiana Jones the Complete Adventures in the last week. The Star Wars Saga should be here tomorrow. This is my next big want as far as great films in a great box set go.

Well couldn't help myself any longer. The GF gave me a $20 BBY giftcard for Valentine's Day. Making my total after tax $55.76 so I jumped at it. Maybe I'll get lucky & they'll do a deal of the day or drop the price lower during the next 30 days & I'll get a PM for a few more bucks back.

If you don't care about the special features, Target currently have their Exclusive Extended Edition singles for 10 bucks a piece or around $32 out the door for all 3. Not a bad deal at all if you don't care for the extras...

Say, I have a story question. The One Ring kept Gollum alive for an extremely long time, it seems like. Then Bilbo took the ring. It kept him alive for a while too.

But then Bilbo let the ring go. By the end of RotK, Bilbo looks a million years old. But Gollum looks no different. Why is this?

Also: at the end of RotK, Bilbo asks Frodo, "Any chance you have that old ring of mine?"

Why doesn't he remember from Fellowship that Frodo was going to Mordor?

I don't think you are supposed to think about this too much. But, generally speaking, the ring affects each of its bearers differently. Usually depending on the purity and strength of their heart, soul, and mind.

Bilbo is very old and starting to lose his mind in the same way that many people's grandparents do.

Perhaps because the ring had altered Gollum so much already?

Because Hobbit time and Human time are not the same thing. 30 years old is like a teenager coming into adulthood in The Hobbit, Bilbo at 111 would be a senior, but not a walking mummy (as seen at the end of Jackson's ROTK). His appearance should be similar to his reveal in Rivendell -- time catches up, but he's not the equivalent of a 111-year-old human. It's simply another deviation from the text, for reasons only Jackson and Walsh can explain.

As for Gollum, he had become "stretched thin" and warped into the almost amphibious monkey he is the books (and film). He isn't "well-preserved", he's become something else entirely.

I'm curious... did you see anything in Fellowship Of The Ring EE that resembled the so called "end of the world green tint" to the overall image while watching it?

Ya. Senility is the only reasonable explanation that I can think of.

I get it.

But somehow it's depressing to think of good ol' Bilbo losing his marbles.

Thanks for explaining that to me.

Well, at the end of the novel, he is 20 years older than he is at the birthday party (making him 131 years old), and so he is fond of napping, but I don't believe Tolkien ever suggested he was senile.

Not to start the "discussion" again as it's been rehashed so many times. But, I'm of the opinion that there really isn't a "green tint" at all. I admit that the image is a bit DARKER than it used to be, but the white snow is pure white and the blue sky is not teal on my screen. Others swear by their copies having christmas tree green snow and "nothing like blue" skies. To each their own though. I'm very pleased with the transfer.
