Requirements:

PowerBook G3
PowerBook G4 Titanium / Aluminum
iBook G4
Mac mini
iMac G5
iMac Intel
MacBook Pro
Mac mini

What I don't understand is... why can a PowerBook G3 use the drive but not a PowerMac G4?

What gives?

One step closer to Apple making this standard. Come on Apple! This is the only thing holding me back from a purchase!

I'm no mac guy, but perhaps the problem lies with design? Was the G4 redesigned, so maybe the drive wouldn't fit in it, versus older models? Don't know, just throwing that out there.

I don't see how that's possible. It's perfectly capable of using 2 optical disc drives.
